I love this game so much, but it sucks that the dodgy camera issues are still there! Is there any fix available to stop the camera zooming out like crazy in third person mode?
Set it to cockpit mode.
It seems to happen to me at the start of a mission and after any in-game cutscenes, so I guess they are resetting the camera.

When it happens I just switch through all the different camera modes until I get to the external close camera and it is fine then, until a mid-mission cutscene that is.
They didn't fix that? That's kinda sucky.
+1 to having this problem. It's weird because various camera modes will work for a couple minutes, and then suddenly they'll unlock and my ship goes flying off into the distance, and I have to rotate around to see if another camera angle works. So weird.
Pressing F1 to change the camera seems to work as a workaround for me at the moment. It's a little bit frustrating to constantly have to press F1 after boosting but I haven't seen any other way that works yet.

You don't actually have to repeat toggling the close-by zoom mode afaik. I've played a good 2 hours yesterday, toggling it once at the start of each mission or after dying.
Still, the default chase camera is way better and more comfortable to use.
Too bad they didn't fix it, maybe they can't. Got the same problem on the retail version.
If they find a way to get rid of this bug in this version, I'll buy it instantly, so much good memories from that game !

Nah, it doesn't work for me. F1 will work for a couple minutes, and then it'll suddenly let go again it looks like.
I think I have a better solution than F1. If you are using the default keys, press Home to set the camera looking forwards. It is a close chase cam than F1 gives and it is locked onto the back of the starfighter. Gives a very tight camera and I like how it plays. A nice alternative to flying inside the cockpit. See what you think.
PCGamingWiki also doesn't list a fix for this problem.

Welp, it's a shame I can't play the game in 3rd person, but at least I now have a way to play the game without the cockpit view.

It's not ideal, but it's something! Thank you very much!
If you have an nVidia card (or Optimus with the game set to use nVidia), maybe this will help (solution given in comments here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKHn8PLEJBs ):

- open nVidia control panel, and select the game profile for Rogue Squadron
- then change : Max pre-rendered frames = 1 ; Mixed GPU acceleration = Single display performance ; Triple buffering = off

I've found that under windows 8.1 there is no such bug, however if you apply one of the fixes given here http://www.blitzbasic.com/Community/post.php?topic=99477&post=1202630 - which are meant to fix performance issues - the camera bug does appear. Using the above tweaks may help in this case too.

Do not play the game with anything open in the background, like Firefox. This seems to undo the nVidia fix.

Thought I'd give this a try, but it made no difference on my nvidia setup. I tested it using the Cloud City mission in the A-Wing due to them being very fast craft. Camera just fell behind all the while, even when F1 was the selected camera. For now I'll stick to using either cockpit (F8) or the forward looking camera mounted just over the rear of the starfighter (HOME) and only switch to an external camera when doing bombing runs in the Y-Wing.
Well, I'm just beginning the campaign... and even so, just a few minutes ago the camera bug reappeared, aaand then disappeared when I launched the game again. Whyyy?

Another LucasArts game which seems a bit temperamental! (I'm beginning to think it's one of their trademarks...)

Hopefully, as you say, there are multiple views...
