I just completed KOTOR 2 for the first time doing a light side playthrough. People tell me playing a dark side character is really quite fun.

But... I'm guessing the ending is rather unsatisfying if you make all the dark side choices, isn't it? Like, I mean if you side with the attackers attacking the settlement on Dantooine, side with Czerka on Telos, etc.. seems like it would leave you with a really unsatisfying ending. I mean, isn't helping the Republic defeat Sith Lord Nihilus and saving Telos a lot more satisfying than helping the thugs wipe out Dantooine's settlement, helping the Czerka screw the Ithorians, and then in the conclusion, merely having one sith lord replace a few others (Nihilus, Sion, Kreia)? In the grand scheme of things, siding with the Republic seems more satisfying.

Granted... there are times where dark side actions can be a lot of fun in the moment. Like taunting some thugs attacking you in an alley or something and then blasting them... is arguably a lot more fun than the light side action, which typically involves attempting to de-escalate and placate them with phrases like "I don't want to fight you. Just let me go on my way" ... and that sort of thing.

So it seems like light side, overall, gives you a satisfying/happy ending, while perhaps denying you the fun of an occasional alley fight and taunting, or such similar pleasures... while a dark side ending gives you the satisfaction of such fights here and there throughout the game, but leads to an undesirable conclusion.

Seems like the most fun playthrough would be one where you don't go 100% light side or 100% dark side... where you indulge in some alley fights and dark side power usage (with fun things like Force Lightning), while siding with Telos, Ithorians, and Dantooine when it really counts. But unfortunately, that doesn't really make sense RP-wise (a Jedi using dark side powers and indulging in dark side actions while remaining aligned with the light side doesn't really make sense).

Star Wars is too binary: you're either light side or dark side, you're pressured to go all the way in either direction, and it leads to imperfectly satisfying games no matter which way you go.

My problem with Kotor 2 is that Kreia told you to be neither too good nor too bad, but you have very seldom the possibility to chose this kind of option between the two extremes.

Well the game actually encourages you to be either 100% light-side or 100% dark-side because you get a boost to certain character attributes if you go all the way in either direction.

So following Kreia's advice and trying to be more neutral in alignment literally makes your character less powerful in the end.

Many of the Dark Side options are cartoonishly evil. I accidentally got dark side points by tricking the Toydarian into letting us use his landing pad.

Yeah this is one of the downsides of pretty much any Star Wars game... tired of the childishly evil villain narratives.

Fortunately KOTOR 2 does a much better job with that.

This is a bit of a SPOILER so...

... but you still end up fighting certain enemies even if you're 100% dark side. Usually in those "major" fights, it does change who you end up allied with - so as dark side your allies are more dark-sided. Though to be honest some of these "dark side" choices don't actually seem all that "dark-sided" overall - in some cases the ones you help are just more selfish/greedy than the others (e.g. Czerka), or possibly happen to have aligned themselves with dark-side allies (but don't worry, if it's a "big bad" dark side ally, you'll still end up taking them on).

And even biggest spoiler: as far as I'm aware, you don't actually ever help the Sith lords - which makes sense since they'd only end up turning on you later on anyway.

Apart from that, the biggest changes involve how you deal with the Jedi masters - as dark side you naturally fight them all (and take their power) - and since you've played light side you know how things end with them when you side with them, so...

All that said though, it IS actually quite possible to end up 100% light sided while indulging in the occasional dark-side shenanigans, such as alley fights, and there's a whole mini-quest involving that slave dancer chick on Citadel Station that you can do fully dark-sided (the quest is longer than without dark-side options, and gets you more cash).

Since you've played the game once already, if you really want to know there are a few "influence/reputation" guides around that can help out (look for spreadsheets, there's a few good ones, can't remember off-hand where I got them from though - google should help).

The game is reasonably flexible - for example I went light-sided (ish) enough to get Mira once, then after that went fully dark side, so was able to have Mira despite being dark-sided. Can't recall if I made her a dark or light sided Jedi though (i.e. can't recall whether I got her to love me or hate me). I think I may have purposefully antagonised her so I'd have a light-side user for healing purposes on the team, or maybe it was because that was easier than sucking up to her since she's such a goody two-shoes..

It's been a while since I played KOTOR 2 but there are ways to win Kreia's favor in dialog. IIRC she likes you to answer in ways that are selfish, wise, and cunning... basically. The "what's in it for me" type responses when people need help are I think the type of response she favors, or at least generally won't penalize you for. And I think she especially likes you to do things to manipulate people for your own selfish ends or for strategic purposes too.

And wants you to do things that show wisdom/cunning.

So, for example, on Dantooine, there's a situation where you come out of a cave and some mercs show up there to confront you, seeking to get you to agree to their demands... or else they fight with you. It's not really an opportune situation for you to fight. You can choose the noble "white knight" type of responses you would expect from a Jedi, which leads to a fight there, and which she disapproves of. You can also choose the "cant wait for a fight" bloodthirsty Sith type of responses, which she also disapproves of. As expected, the more wise and manipulative responses that help you avoid the confrontation... while setting yourself up in a better position to fight these people later (more easily and with less risk) are what gain you influence points with Kreia here.

Fits with her views about the force: not being light side or dark side, but just kinda neutral and hating it all.
