When the screen turns black, try quick-saving and then either a) quick-loading, or if that doesn't work b) exiting the game completely and restarting it and loading from the main menu.
A couple times throughout the game I was hit with the same black screen problem and this quick-save/load worked for me. Hope it works for you as well! :)
