I'm not a fan of the Star Wars series but have heard and read so many great reviews that I've bought KOTOR. I've just reached the first opportunity to level up and want to check a few things before resuming.

I like to progress through games with relative ease which is why I've chosen the easy gameplay setting. So my first question is, can I level up my character and still experience most of the games features without having to follow a specific path? So, eventually I'd like to be able to repair but it's not a priority. Does that make sense?

The same applies to the overall difficulty of the game. For instance, early on if I wanted to pile skill points in say, dexterity, am I going to find the game near unplayable as I progress?

Finally, does anyone else find the controls a little fiddly and if so, are there any recommended keyboard configs that has worked for you?

As always, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cool, a friend of mine new to the series! Now I can fuck with you without feeling guilty about it! :P

I'll start easy regarding your skill point question: it all depends on how and who you play as. Right now I'm early on as a Scout so I'm loading up on Dexterity but that may not be wise as a Soldier. And if you aren't aware of it, you are going to become a Jedi so you might think twice about shooting skills because you will eventually get a light sabre.

And the keyboard controls are the same as most FPS games so I don't have a problem, but you might want to experiment when you get to Swoop Racing and escaping the Sith blockade.

KotOR isn't a combat-oriented game and you don't need to put a lot of thought into that, if you don't want to - some enjoy overly calculating statistics and everything, as I do - especially on the easy setting.
One has to admit that the controls are a bit clunky and that can make combat difficult, but you'll get used to it pretty fast, after one hour or so.

Skill points aren't very important in KotOR. (KotOR II is a different story, and I highly recommend that you tackle that after the first game of the series, if you like it.) You can develop a few skills to the maximum by yourself, but for most tasks your companions will be able to help you out.
You should definitely train Persuade though, since this is the only skill that only the player can learn. And it should be mentioned that only the Scout class can train Persuade from the first second in the game. All Jedi classes can train Persuade later on, but you'll become a Jedi a few hours in and miss some dialogue for about 20% of the game. That mechanic led to me choosing the Scout every time, no matter what I want to play as, but that's a personal preference.

Short version: don't worry about combat, especially with easy settings; skill your Persuade skill and whatever else you like and can, but don't worry about missing much beyond that.

That's really helpful - thank you. Good to hear that I can play the game without having to over-rely on complex stats.
I've played through 3 times over the years and each time I focused on the ability to persuade, pick locks, hack computers, and bash the shit out of stuff as fast as possible. As far as I can tell that's all you really need...particularly on easy. You can make it through the game by critical striking every enemy over and over again, and you don't have to worry about who's in your party when specializing for hacking and lockpicking.

As an added bonus the only Jedi skill I ever used frequently was the one that let me move really fast so I could get between points quicker.

I guess what I'm saying is that if you invest in those skills and stats you can experience all the game has to offer and it will be a breeze, all the enjoyment of one of the greatest RPGs ever and none of the frustration.

No it's not! I considered that when I posted but you become a Jedi as soon as you leave Taris which is really just a tutorial. Besides look at the pictures on the game screen; obviously you get a light sabre so duh!

Yeah, a seven hours long tutorial :D.

4th or 5th playthrough you can do Taris in half that! :P

Oh, I mentioned this is another thread but it's kind of dead in there; did you know if you go Dark Side Male you grow a beard? I had no clue and I play this game all the time. Do you know if this happens in #2?

SPOILER ... alright, so I was just giving you a hard time while waiting for a download to finish. :p The back of the box even talked about choosing the light side or dark side.

Doesn't it depend on the model? No bearded females IIRC.

Yeah that's why i never saw it. This is the 1st time I've played as a male good or bad. I need to try #2 with a male as well just so I can get the better Jedi sidekick.

You can always install the mod that Hassat_Hunter linked you to in the other thread that allows you the better sidekick as a female. Doesn't help with the beard in #2 though.
You can always start as Jesus Jedi.
Beard whatever path you choose...! :)
Thank you all for the replies.

I'm still on the lower level of Taris so therefore am expecting plenty of opportunities to level up. First impressions are how similar it is to Mass Effect....or, Mass Effect is similar to KOTOR.

Good stuff so far except the dodgy hands dealt my way when playing Pazaak.

Yeah, they cheat at Pazaak. If you are having trouble you might wait a while; you'll get the chance for some better cards later on Taris.
