Using Linux and loving this game I just had to install it per Wine right now after purchasing it, which thankfully isn't too difficult.
There are a few things to keep in mind, and also one or two extras, so I would like to provide a short how-to here.
This thread can of course also be used for discussion, if someone has a problem getting the game to run on his machine.

My system:
Arch Linux x86_64 with Kernel 3.17.1-1-ARCH
Wine 1.7.29
Resolution: 1920x1080

So, here we go:

01. Installation
Nothing fancy here, I used nothing but a standard vanilla 64-bit prefix, no additional components required.
Installing the game itself was easy too, no problems until the very end. Two error messages appeared, but they have no effect as far as I can tell, since the game was installed properly afterwards. So just ignore them.
Oh, and don't worry about the installation hanging at the end, just wait a few minutes, it will finish after a while.

02. Configuration
You can set your desired resolution here, unless you are planning to play the game in widescreen mode, which I will cover in the next paragraph. Everything else should be left as it is. Disabling the Hardware Mouse can help reducing the occasional crashes in the game though, if you are playing in windowed mode.

03. Widescreen
If you wish to play the game in widescreen modus, for example 16:9, you need to download a few files.
First of all, the UniWS patcher, which can be found here, also some images for HUD correction.
Everything is explained very well on this site and you should be just fine, if you follow the instructions there.
In order to make the new resolution work, you will have to edit the swkotor.ini file in the main directory of the game, and alter the respective lines for width and height.
I also had to enable the Emulation of a Virtual Desktop per winecfg (this option can be found under Graphics) to avoid glitches.

04. In-game
Finally, to prevent the game from crashing and some graphical issues, disable Frame Buffer Effects, Soft Shadows and Grass (disabling grass isn't too bad, don't worry). Everything else can be set to maximum, or to your liking.

And that's it, ladies and gentlemen.
After 30 hours and beating the game, with not even one crash, I am really satisfied. The only issue I could recognize is almost not worth a mention at all: When jumping from cutscenes to actual videos, for example when the Ebon Hawk lands on a planet, parts of the image are transmitted, but only at the black bars of the video. Since it's not affecting the video, but only its frame, it really doesn't matter.

I wish you the best of luck and a lot of fun with this true masterpiece, have a nice day.

UniWS does not support the GOG version yet....
I came here specifically to post how this goes with Wine. Thank you. Now let's hope this works as well in Wine .28 as it does in .29 (I haven't run a system upgrade since 3.17.1 came out due to a btrfs bug). That or Cross Over 14.
When I try to install it just freezes after a varying amount of time. Any ideas on why?

NinjaEdit: Just unfroze and threw up the errors RIGHT after I posted. Strange because it had been frozen for 5 mins.

Oh well :|

I'm running KOTOR in WINE 1.7.28 (through Wineskin on OS X 10.10) and it works perfectly. The only hitch is that you have to disable cutscenes (an issue specific to Aurora Engine-based games, I think) and that the uniws patch doesn't work for any resolution below 1440 x 900....

So...? It may not be officially supported (whatever that means), but it worked just fine for me.

As you can see in my how-to the cutscenes work on my system, perhaps it is rather related to OS X? Or even 1.7.28 (unlikely)?

I don't remember issues with Neverwinter Night's cutscenes. Also I've recently played NWN2 which cutscenes intact.

In anycase, thank you. Hopefully I should be able to run a system upgrade anyway. It looks like I can black list the kernel and run a system upgrade without too much trouble.
thanks for the how to. i got it up and running on my system thanks to your advice, i run linux mint 17. i couldn't get it to play full screen even following your widescreen directions, at first. i did get it to go full screen when i installed it through playonlinux with wine 1.7.29 though, i just have to click the window resize x . i have to open it through playonlinux as well, the shortcut it created would only get me to the menu screen and then freeze (probably an easy fix, but i'm happy enough to open it this way), small price to pay though to get the game working. hope this helps anyone else if they have encountered a similar problem.

Edit 2014-10-28: Added system specifications
Edit 2014-10-29: Added Grass to options that should be disabled; Added conclusion
Edit 2014-10-30: Added some advices
Game installs for me. Runs under Crossover Linux (commercial Wine). All the mods I wanted also installed and appear to be functional.

However the widescreen mod only works halfway.

UniWS worked just fine. I get a full screen, nicely sized display and movies at 1920x1200. However, my HUD is defective. It's tiny and pushed up and to the left, where an 800x600 window version of the HUD would overlay.

I used the 1920x1200 HUD files found at the UniWS link above, and I put them in my override folder. I even tried starting a fresh game after install. No luck :(.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Well, obviously my instructions are for the good old and normal Wine, not the way to expensive and in my opinion completely useless CrossOver.
So, you could try to use that instead of CrossOver.

And of course make sure that you've copied the files correctly in the correct folder. For example, you shouldn't copy the extracted folder into the game's folder, but the files themselves.

I appreciate the walkthrough on the install. I have no experience using Wine and so I'm a little confused. I've downloaded the exe and .bin file but how do I get Wine to pick that? Sorry for the stupid question, but a linux noob here. still learning everything I can...

Is is quite easy, really. Here is a sort-of official guide, very detailed.
Basically you just have to open a console, go to the directory where your files are (most likely ~/Downloads) and run the wine command with the executable as a parameter.

Thanks! That walkthrough was extremely helpful. My biggest problem now, is that it installs to about 85% and then gives a Runtime Error at 69:445

I've tried multiple downloads so I'm guessing its my machine, has anyone seen this issue? I've spent hours just trying to get this bloody game installed. LOL.

Thanks for your help!

As you can read in the first post, I too encountered two error messages at the end of the installation.
You could try to ignore them, or it, if you have only one error for any reason, and try playing the game anyway.

I did see you had two error messages. I do try ignoring, and starting the program, but the screen changes to 800x600 and shows the lucas arts splash then goes back to the desktop. still trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong. Thanks for your input. I do appreciate it.
