Where did you install the game? If in Program files folder, try to reinstall it somewhere else, i.e. C:\GOG Games. Also, go into game folder and find swkotor.ini file. Open it in Notepad and check if under [Graphics Options] Subtitles are set to 1 (Subtitles=1).
