So, I'm out of ideas for getting KotOR2 to be playable on my laptop. I've tried windowed mode, disabling movies, disabling shadows and grass, disabling hardware mouse, making sure Vsync was disabled, configuring the .ini file, reinstalling, setting affinity, updating drivers, compatibility mode, running as administrator, everything I've seen on this forum and more. Heck, I even went out on a limb and tried running it in Windows CeMeNT, which, obviously, didn't work. So I'm out of ideas. What I've got is Windows 7 with 6GB ram and an integrated Intel HD4000 graphics chip. at least I got the game on sale, so I'm not out too much money, but I'm still disappointed. I would think that If I could run games that came out only a couple years ago that are much more CPU and graphics intensive, I'd be able to run this game too. If anyone has a fix that actually works, I'd love to hear it. Thanks.

KotOR 2 runs perfectly fine on Windows 7, it's what I and thousands of others use. Your problem (I believe) is the Intel integrated graphics. It's the bane of many a game, not just KotOR.

I think this has to do with Intel Not having a credible GPU when these games were created, so they were never designed/tested on Intel HW.

If I look at the box of a game on my shelf from 2005, it has a list of supported GPUs. Only NVidia and AMD ones.

More modern games have been built in a time when Intel GPUs actually worked, so they were designed/tested with that in mind.

In the games like this were I pay attention to the support talk, most of the problems seem to be with Intel Integrated GPUs.
Well, luckily I had an old xp desktop around, so after some driver updates and settings configuration, I got it to work great, except for that annoying swoop race bug where you turn into an airplane, but that's another topic.

Actually I can play kotor 2 on intel graphics on my pre-historic lenovo sl410. The problem is gog build, which crashes after character creation and the intro movie.

I have old cdrom release from 2004 or whatever the release year was and when I install this version and apply patches it runs correctly even with TSLRCM. I'm running on linux under wine but from what I googled the problem happens on windows as well.
On my system (W10, AMD RX480) I have to uncheck frame buffer effects (in advanced graphics options) to prevent a CtD after character creation.

you wanna turn off grass too. And use the config tool in the game's directory to disable movies (only removes the pre-rendered ones, not the cutscenes rendered via the game engine). Turning off movies fixed an annoying occasional crash while saving the game or loading a new level for me.

I have (had) the same experience (Vista, laptop, Intel integrated graphics).
The problem is definitely the GOG build, because my retail copy of KotOR2 runs perfectly (disc-based): First I had to patch the game to US build (my is a European release), then added the excellent TSL mod, and it works perfectly now. (Though I still have to keep the disc in the drive whilst I play, which was the main reason I bought the GOG version. The optical drive on a decade-old laptop probably will not be the last component to fail ….)

Edit:
Obviously I tried every suggestion, and every patch, in every combination, before I returned to the original game. I remain hopeful that GOG will remedy this, eventually.

KotOR 2 NEVER runs perfectly fine on Windows 7, it always crushes if not taken special measures, it's what I and hundred thousands of others experience. Your problem (I believe) is lying.
