It has the most customer ratings compared to the others. Is this game worth purchasing? I'm just looking for a good star wars game.

Define 'good star wars game'. KotOR 1 has a lot of fans and is desribed as 'cRPG classics', thus the high ratings here. But the question is if you like that genre? If so, do you like or at least tolerate D&D-kinda mechanics? If so - do you like/tolerate BioWare games (typically for them, sometimes, you are either lawful stupid or total scumbag)?
I think most (if not evry) game here is canon, if that's important for you. And you play as one of very important characters in SW universe.
Is it the best SW game on GOG? No, it's the best SW game, period.

No SW game is canon anymore. After Disney bought out Lucas, they retconned everything except the 6 live action movies and the two cartoons out of existence. Anything new from here on out will now be canon, but everything that came before is not anymore. All of the old books, games, comics, etc. are now considered "Star Wars Legends", the banner that Disney places all non-canonical material under.

I prefer to think of it as everything canon until Disney come in, and nothing after that.

Amen. :D Altought I also love KotOR 2.

Wait... What?! So all that stuff that was about in both KotORs, Kyle Katarn and Jaden Korr... it's all non-canon? Jesus, Disney...

I agree with w221 - let's pretend Disney never happend. Unless they do a good movie (not judging it before seeing it myself), but still - to render everything to this moment a 'legend'...
Why would you care what is considered canon and what not?

The two KotOR games have a Star Wars setting and are therefore Star Wars games in my book... and they are the very best, of course. So yes, play and enjoy them.
Original question first.
KotOR is the best computer RPG ever made. Yes, worth playing. Yes.
Yes, much better than BG2.
---

The way canon usually works, is that new writers are at liberty to override anything not explicitly marked as non-overridable. But they can also re-canonize anything at leisure.

So if some new serie decides to mention Kyle Katarn, he's suddenly back, but they can also rework him to something different, if that seems to make a good story.

The most obviously "totally out of canon, never happened" things are the previously totally canon Heir to the Empire books by Timothy Zahn, which are now overruled by the new timeline of the new movie trilogy.

Haven't seen any indication of Disney to do any replacement work with the Old Republic timeline, and probably wont as long as "The Old Republic" MMORPG is running. Probably wont bother even when it collapses.

There are plenty of good Star Wars games, most of them with different genres and therefore not comparable to each other.

What kind of game are you looking for?

Honestly, it's for the best. While the games (novels, comics, etc) provide interesting concepts and situations, they don't jive all that well with the movies. Still, canon or not, they are enjoyable in their own right.

Lucas always made a separation between his canon and what was called "Expanded Universe". The people from Licensing were the ones who tried to merge it all together.

johnperk: snip
There are several SW games being considered "the best":
- Star Wars TIE-Fighter has often been hailed as the best space combat sim and one of the best PC games of all time.
- Star Wars Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast was released to critical acclaim and can be considered as a classic.
- Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic is being considered as one of the best RPGs of all time.
- Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords' writing and characters are being considered to be much superior over those of Kotor 1 by many fans. The game has been released unfinished but the The Sith Lords Restored Content Mod improved it a lot.

As you can see there are plenty of best (Star Wars) titles to choose from. ;)

It's a RPG, so screw canon and play it as you want... that's the way a RPG is meant to be played.

Seriously, I always want to slap those people who do KOTOR2 canon runs or suggest certain planet orders since "canon"... do your own goddamn thinking... canon got us TOR.

Actually, there are a rash of rumors circulating that Disney is considering a full-on remake of KotOR 1, updated for modern consoles. Apparently they were very surprised by the positive reactions to the recent update for KotOR 2 and now they are considering doing much more with the first game.

Well that'd be pretty darn awesome.

Yay, with EA Origin!
My vote would be for TIE Fighter is best of all (that I've played, I've not played ALL of them, but I'm still pretty secure.)

I also think the entire series: Dark Forces, Jedi Knight, Jedi Knight II, Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy is VERY very good and better than KotOR 1 and 2. Some of the stories through that are superb.

I think KotOR 2 is better than 1, but they are much more weak-sauce than they should have been because of BioWare.
