DrNilesCrane: I actually didn't buy the GOG version (I still have the Best of PC collection which includes KOTOR) but since I'd never played KOTOR before and I got sucked into the excitement here, I decided to start it. I'm playing on Windows 7 64-bit.

I was having freezes/crashes every few minutes on the Endar Spire and occasionally in the Lower City on Taris. Running the game in a window helped a little bit (as seen in this video here: http://youtu.be/W3Gbe_6I14g) but I still got crashes, specifically one that happened right after a cutscene in the Lower City.

Then after doing some research online I found that you could write "Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1" in the graphics options section of the swkotor.ini file and it might help. I was able to pass the freezing section and the game so far hasn't crashed again. Figured a lot of people probably know this but just in case I'd write it here.
Hi,

See above. My little trick also solves the multi-core problems, such as e.g. the game crashing during the bridge cutscene on the Endar Spire. Incidentally it also solves the problems with SWKotR 2 of the game flickering as for example during interactive cutscenes (e.g. Coorta are you dead yet?) and then crashing (did not happen in WIn 7 64bit only with Win 8 64bit - and possibly Win 8.1 64bit). You also do not have to worry about disabling cutscenes - you can really enable everything and enjoy the game(s) in its(their) full (!!!) glory.

It works like a charm for me. No more setting 'affinity' (the number cores to be used by the game) to one. No more bothering about setting the game to WinXP Service Pack 2 compatibility mode.

Apart from that, I also do not remember the game crashing all over the place. It(both) would run absolutely rock solid !!! The only thing that would happen with SWKotOR1 was that the game would on very (!!!) rare occasions minimise after a cutscene but all I had do then was to click on the SWKotOR symbol in the Windows task bar at the bottom of the screen and the game would run happily again.

I have a Core i7-3770 and an Nvidia GTX 570. The current system I am using is Win 8.1 64 bit.

I hope this helps.

Cheers

I have the KOTOR collection (KOTOR 1+2) on DVD. The second game worked without problems. But in the first game, every time a video was shown there was a 50% chance that the game crashes. Starting the game or going from one planet to another was really painful. The "Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1" did not help. I had no problems during the normal gameplay except once the game crashed every time at one point, but I solved this by changing the resolution. I have windows 7 64bit.

Is this version the same as the gog version? Is there a way to solve this problem? In case nothing works, how do I disable movies?

Hi,

What graphics card do you have. With Nvidia cards it can help if you disable (off) threaded optimisation in the Nvidia driver menu.

Otherwise try setting SWKotOR.exe to WindowsXP Service Pack 2 and administrator mode.

By the way, more info on the trials and tribulations of getting SWKotOR 1 & 2 to run on Vista and later can be found here: http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?t=194324.

I hope this info helps.
