From what I gathered, the Steam release of KOTOR II received an exclusive update a number of years back. that added improved functionality.

Looking at threads on this forum, it seems that the GOG version did not initially receive that update. I can't seem to find a clear answer, but has the GOG version been in fact updated with that Steam exclusive patch?

It's June 2017, so I'm hoping yes. I own both versions, but would much rather play the GOG version, unless it lacks that native widescreen support and bug fixes introduced in that Steam version. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Nope, it still isn't included with GOG.
It looks like Aspyr did the upgrades tightly integrated into Steam.

Aspyr also did a lot of ports to the Mac that are on Steam, that aren't here.

I suspect Aspyr isn't a big fan of DRM freedom.
Wow, that's a little disappointing; both to hear that it's not updated, but also the type of people responsible for the update.

I'd like to hear opinions then about the relative merits of the "improved" Steam version. vs. the DRM-free goodness of the GOG version- i.e is the Steam version worth putting up with for improved functionality, or would you advise sticking with the GOG version? Am I missing something if I play the GOG copy?

Unless you want native widescreen support and controller support, stick with GOG version. Apparently the new update introduces some issues with fog and lightsaber textures.
Yes, there is nothing in the new patch that I'd call a must-have... even the new native Linux support isn't essential, since the game runs perfectly with Wine.
In addition to what Hickory said, there are achievements with the new patch, if that's something you care about.
Thanks for the insights guys. I actually think I'm going to play the Steam version (gasp!), only because of the SteamWorks supported mods; there's some pretty cool looking ones. Thanks again for the help guys.
Do you think they will ever update the GOG version to the new one? Also, does the GOG version have TSLRCM included? I've heard that GOG usually repacks games with their unofficial patches, and that's basically KOTOR II's unofficial patch.
No, the game doesn't come with TSLRCM here.

And no, I don't think the patch will come to GOG at this point.

Ah, that's a bummer. Thanks for the answer though!

I decided to stay clear of any mods as they (exception VTM:Bloodlines) break more than they fix. Only using "uniws" and "Widescreen UI Fix" like described in the "spoiler" button under the "The old version of this fix can be found here in case the above method causes any problems" text at http://deadlystream.com/forum/topic/3142-guide-xuuls-ultimate-guide-for-kotor-2/
