Some overly complicated puzzles that lengthen the game more than they should, one of the worst final boss fights in videogames, not nearly as much lightsaber duels as in Jedi Academy, no customized abilities progression, no Dark Side ending/path, less Light Saber choices and lastly, CANNOT ROLL WHEN YOU'RE KNOCKED DOWN.

Not a bad game, but it feels like a step down from it's predecessor in almost every way. I don't see myself playing it again when Academy left me a much better experience.
you are aware that academy came after outcast right?
that being said enjoy whichever game you enjoy more
Isn't it Jedi Knight 2?

DarkAkriloth: Isn't it Jedi Knight 2?
The progression is:

Dark Forces > Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight > Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast > Jedi Academy

although I'm not sure Academy is really involved in the series because Katarn isn't the main character.
Heh, that's a pretty confusing way of naming your series. At least now I can say they really improved themselves in the sequel.

indeed you can, and yeah it can be confusing to newcomers to the series, who knows why they did it
I've read Academy was originally planned as an expansion pack to Outcast but they felt they'd developed enough of a game for a stand alone release. I remember it costing more than the average expansion pack but less than a full release... think it was $40.

As for the game... yeah Academy definitely has the best gameplay and locations for the series. Its my favorite in that regard. Its main weakness is the story... which is just kind of meh compared to the others.
To be honest, I'm not sure if the story of the Jedi Knight series could be considered a strong point. At least the 2 last games didn't leave a good impression.

True, but the games usually had more interesting villains or motivations than Academy. The annoying sidekick turning to the darkside and the missions being one offs didn't make it as interesting from a story perspective. I didn't mind as the revamped saber combat and wonderful locations more than made up for any shortcomings in the story.
I feel the Jedi Knight Outcast story was significantly better, the fact you had a female partner that you had to rescue made it a stronger incentive than your friend in Jedi academy.

Desann for me and that quest that you crashed in a swamp, the first time you enter the massive temple and then get in Lando Ships where very memorable for me and the empire felt like a proper empire all the imperial forces felt so bad ass.

What I think Jedi Academy done best was mission/level design.
I prefer Jedi Outcast. I like the more complicated level design as it's more interesting to navigate as opposed to Jedi Academy where I tend to blow through missions much quicker. And the story is much better, Kyle Katarn is a more fleshed out character than Jaden, and the entire game feels more like one epic adventure rather than the stop and start feel of Jedi Academy's missions. The upgrading of powers is something I care less about because I care more about using powers rather than unlocking them, and both Outcast and Academy are good in that regard.

Not to say that Jedi Academy is bad. I very much enjoy the game for the expanded lightsaber combat and Force powers. Just not as much as Outcast.
