Hello,

I got the disc version and I always used the patch to play this game. It enables a lot of things including high resolution and so forth. However, I don't know if the patch works for the GOG version of the game and so I'm hesitating with buying this GOG version.

This is the patch:

https://www.letsplayforum.de/index.php/Thread/159414-Star-Wars-Episode-1-Racer-x86-x64-Setup-Fixes-und-Patches/?pageNo=1

The thread is in german but it's an english installer. I tested it with my disc version and it works really well. Did anyone try this patch?

EDIT: Ah, nvm. Checked the installer. It's very specifically made for the CD version and I don't think it will work. I will keep the thread though, maybe someone finds a fix of some sort.

If it works with the FTP patched version of the game, it should work.
The GOG.com version is pretty much the CD release + the official LucasArts FTP patch.

GOG.com only did some other small hacks. More info here: https://github.com/OpenSWE1R/openswe1r/issues/142
Aside from that, it's all wrappers which are hooking into the game.
So the original game files remain untouched, except for SWEP1RCR.EXE.

So even if it doesn't work for the GOG.com version, you could pirate another unpatched game binary (SWEP1RCR.EXE) and then apply the unofficial patches. Simply because you get most official CD files with the GOG.com release,

I'm not sure why you'd buy the game again if you already have the CD version though.

Also, feature rundown:

* Setup Funktion für 32Bit und 64Bit Windows Systeme.

GOG has own setup.

* International Patch v1.1 und US Patch v1.1 integriert (Nur in der CD Version)

GOG version comes with slightly modified US Patch v1.1 (aka LucasArts FTP version, this is the base for the GOG SWEP1RCR.EXE).

* Widescreen Auflösungs Patch (Dient als neuer Launcher)

GOG patches list of resolutions, no widescreen patch though (part of SWEP1RCR.EXE).

* dgVoodoo v2.51 integriert

GOG has it's own solution for this, which should mostly work better

* Single Core Fix integriert via Batch Start.

GOG version has its own patch for this which is nicer (part of SWEP1RCR.EXE)

* nomousy ist integriert und wird über den Widescreen Auflösungs Patch gesteuert

Okay, GOG doesn't ship with this, but might have it's own patch as part of its dgVoodoo alternative. I did not check though. Not sure if you really need it anyway.

* IPXwrapper integriert und kann über den Launcher eingestellt gestartet werden. (Multiplayer Funktion)

GOG version includes this very same tool. It's just not configurable via the launcher (which probably does nothing more than starting the ipxwrapper GUI, which you can also start by running it's exe manually).

* Bonus: Extrahierungs Tool für Cutscene Videos (Speicherung in UTVideo und PCM) und Musikdatein (Speicherung in PCM) (DVD Collection hat nur das für Videos)

Not done, but not sure why it's even part of that patch. As it's a seperate tool. You can just download ffmpeg if you really wanted this.

Fair enough. I don't think the patch would work anyway though. Because the setup will only run if you have the CD in your CD Drive. It then installs the game with the files from your CD in a specific way with the unofficial patch.

You can't just install over an existing installation. Be it GOG version or the disc version. Probably to kind of prevent piracy.

In my search to solve the issues that I've encountered, I've installed and run just about every configuration, installer, and game source file (cd, dvd, ftp, gog) you could think of. GOG is by far the best, the issues it's had have been prevalent in all the others, the only thing the GOG launcher is missing is easy access to the advanced video settings, but it maxes them for you anyways. Plus the support for any resolution with GOG is nice, not just 1024x768, 1600x900, or the rare and elusive 1080. (GOG is running at 1440p no problems for me)

Until OpenSWE1R gets a release out (non-linux is a performance nightmare), GOG will probably be the best option for modern day computers.
