puppysnuff: Worked for me with some trial and error, maybe will help with others.

In doing some research, it seems that the game had issues with memory management. I vaguely remember this the first time around years ago.

What has helped me the most is putting the game into compatibility mode for Windows 98/ME. This does have one peculiar side effect of moving the savegame folder the game is looking for from:

\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\Petroglyph\Empire At War\Save
to
\ProgramData\Petroglyph\Empire At War\Save

With this in mind, you'd need to move/copy your existing savegame files.

I'll note it doesn't fix the issue completely, but it sure works a heck of a lot better.

charles82: Putting it into compatibility mode for 98/ME is the only way I've got the game to run properly. Thank you.
I don't know why but without it the game runs right maybe the first time after rebooting and then goes haywire after you load another saved game or whatever.
Thx Bro <3

4dyce: Just thought i would let you guys know:

Removing the tick for Disable Scaling on High DPI Settings and running in Win 98/ME fixed my stuttering issues on Windows 10.

Thanks for this guys!

4Dyce.
For me (Windows 10) only removing the tick helped ! Compatibilty mode with Win 98/ME only made it worse. Just saying to let know other people.Same applies to the Forces of Curruption expansion.
Running on Windows 10, I've tried compatibility mode for Windows 98/ME and disabling Scaling on High DPI settings....nothing has really worked. The game is still choppy (especially the sound effects) and I've lost a couple save games too. I'm not to much of a tech guru...but any help would be appreciated :)

I have the same problem and I can't figure it out. I've ran all compatibility modes and I still can't seem to fully fix it.

Did both of you tried applying the patch from disney?

https://www.gog.com/forum/star_wars_empire_at_war_gold/lag_after_30_minutes_of_gameplay/post2

It is NOT included in the release of GOG.

Thanks for the reply, I think I remember downloading one, but the other asked for the installation CD (I'm not sure how to work around this). Been trying a few different things suggested on the GOG support site, nothing has fixed the problems yet.

Which one did you try and had the problem?
And was it the one from disney?
File names:
EAW_RAM_MPLobby_update.exe 578.928 Bytes
EAWUpdate1_5.exe 22.706.524 Bytes

I still got my old downloads from disney, so check if they changed ;) (juuuust saying)
EDIT: !! Don't remember where I have seen/read it here on the forums, but it seems that W10 has changed something and you might need to have like Virtual Clonedrive installed for certain things to work, MAYBE it is related? (as the other user pointed out, after installing like this, music suddenly started playing IIRC)

Yeah I went here: https://help.disney.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/STAR-WARS-Empire-at-War-Update-Files and the one at the bottom - It was the "MPlobby" one that worked, the other newer one says I need the installation CD. To be honest, I'm not sure what W10 or Virtual Clonedrive are haha, but I'll do some research and see if I can't figure it out.

Sorry to lazy to type :D
W10, short for Windows 10.

Virtual clonedrive is a software with which you can play so called iso-files (so clones of CD/DVD) as if they were real CD/DVD.

Link, sorry don't have it ready, but Virtual clonedrive is from Elaborate Bytes AG in Switzerland. (most common one used AFAIK ;) )

EDIT: :D sorry.....just tried, not asking for CD as it is already on this version, but I am using W8.1 anyway.

Edit2:And as a suggestion for ANY game: Never ever (and I mean it!!!) install a game into program files (x86) directory. If you did install it there, remove and install in a normal directly, example for me:
D:\GOGGames\Star Wars - Empire At War Gold

Win is rather stupid with the handling of the (x86) directory!!!!!
(might be also part of your problem if you installed it there......

I have downloaded all updates from the Disney site already. I ran the FOC_RAM_MPLobby_update.exe already and it didn't change anything, but the other updates say, "Star Wars Empire At War Forces of Corruption not found. Please reinstall the game from the original CD-ROM and try again." I have the choppy gameplay problem with both Empire at War and Forces of Corruption, and I play using the one CD for both as I have the Gold Pack.

okaaay....
FOC as well.....that is strange.

Out of your description not all the way clear, so I ask: You are using the GOG version or the original CD?

Where installed? (as described I hope not in (96) whatever?)

Did you try with Virtual Clondedrive installed (in case you do not have any physical CD/DVD-ROM, anything higher like Blue-ray does NOT count)

Which GPU (graphic-card) have you got?
hmmmm.....
not sure if it is using it, but have you got directplay installed? (Windows component and default wise NOT installed, was/is getting deactivated after certain updates)
As you can start, I assume directx9.0c installed......
Before I forget, for installing directplay you might have to deactivate your antivirus.....found this bug on one of the MS-web-pages....otherwise it might NOT install correctly but will not show error message....(yeah, great job MS .sarcasm off)
Don't start via galaxy, start either directly via teh two exe files (swfoc.exe or sweaw.exe)
In case you want to use mods, create a bat-file and start via this.
For not being detected......
do you know regedit? check if you have HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\GOG.com\Games\1421404887 this key....
in there you shall see PATH and where you installed it. (for sweaw.exe)
Not sure about this one, but found ti in my registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\LucasArts\Star Wars Empire at War
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\LucasArts\Star Wars Empire at War Forces of Corruption
Do not discuss openly the CD-keys here in the forum contained in there!
Both entries shall have the install path in there as well.

The above might indicated/solve why the patch is not finding the game. What you could try as well (if you do not have those entries), try installing the game with Antivirus disabled....

All what I can think of in the moment......and really strange that even FOC is stuttering for you....
I heard that for really only a handful of people it does help if they have the patch (which is included in the GOG-release) removed. This means having the single files for units and so on. Don't have a link or precise name for it, but IIRC you can find it on moddb.....
For FOC, you could try to run the game with a mod installed (like Thrawn's Revenge....just to see if it makes any difference (as see before...)

And the 2GB-patch shall have taken care of your stuttering with the EAW.....strange....(and I assume you just mistyped the name (bold in your post) [EAW_RAM_MPLobby_update.exe] (together with maybe the admin/dpi-changes latest.....or combination thereof)

Another thing just jumping to my mind, you do not use some optimization software like raptr or similar for tuning EAW and FOC????

Sorry for the lengthy reply ;)

puppysnuff: Worked for me with some trial and error, maybe will help with others.

Worked for me even 5 Years later. All stuttering is gone, thank you man! <3
Putting this game in Windows 98 Compatibility mode on Windows 10 makes it minimize everytime i click something. You can see the system cursor on top of the game every time...
FPS Limiter does not detect the game while its running, compatibility mode fix creates more problems, high DPI scaling thing does nothing, disney fix link is down...

Running low on ideas here.
