So I've been losing my mind trying to figure out how to solve this...

In Jedi Knight, whenever you pick up an item, or you take damage, the screen flashes with a colored overlay that slowly fades out. While this overlay is active, my frame rate is seemingly cut in half.

I've come back to this game numerous times throughout the years (because I love it), and it's always an ordeal to get working properly on whatever system I happen to be using at the time... but I could almost swear there was a solution to this very issue. I just can't find out what it is anymore.

Additional info: The game is running on Windows 10 in software mode on an Intel i5 7600K

I don't expect anyone to be able to help me with this apparently very rare issue, but I figure it can't hurt to ask!

It's not easy to help you since you provided no information about your system (hardware, OS, game's configuration, etc.).

Anyway, if you are running it on a modern Windows version, I would try setting the game to run in compatibility mode for Windows XP.
Oh my bad, I just figured everyone here would be running it a modern version of Windows. Yeah I am, Windows 10, and running software rendering (CPU is i5 7600K, not sure if that's relevant).

Not 100% sure on what you mean by game configuration, there aren't a lot of options unless we're getting into 3rd-party stuff. Lets consider everything default for that, I suppose.

I've already tried running it in compatibility for Windows XP (as per another suggestion you made for a different user regarding cutscene issues, small world!). Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be related to that. I can isolate the issue down what I stated in the OP - it seems to only happen whenever there's a color overlay on the screen (and only in software mode). The moment that color fades away, the normal frame rate is restored.

Again, it's unusually specific, so it's probably not something anyone knows anything about, but thank you very much for responding!

I asked because I wanted to know if you had changed the game default installation in any way.
I think you may want to try a different DirectX library “ddraw.dll”: here you can find a couple of alternatives, however I strongly suggest you to try using dgVoodoo2, if you have a GPU that supports DirectX 11.
Follow this guide or this other one.

You are welcome.
Good luck with your attempts: making a good old game to fully work on a modern system could be frustrating, but is also satisfying!

Sorry for the late response, I've been a bit busy -

dgVoodoo2 solves the issue, hardware rendering mode functions perfectly and the issue is completely absent in it. FMVs seem to be a bit glitchy with it in use, but that is probably a problem on my end.

Overall it is a fantastic option, but because I am insane, I wanted to see if I can solve the issue while still playing in software mode like I did back in the day.

For whatever reason, this FOV/Mipmap patch seems to fix the stuttering issue in software mode with little in the way of side effects (as far as I can tell). It does... something with the framerates -- makes it so that I don't need to cap them to get the first-person animations to work either.

-- I cannot post links but it's called "Project: Jedi Knight/Mysteries of the Sith FOV/Mipmap Patches" and it's on a site named "JKDF2.net" --

So if anyone else is reading this, I'd second the recommendation for dgVoodoo2 as well. And if for some reason you also enjoy software mode, but have that weird specific stuttering issue, there's that patch that will hopefully help!
