Just a word of caution to everyone involved, DarkXL is great, but DarkXL is nowhere near a finished product. The engine is still in alpha and in the present iteration, there's a bug in Dark Forces that will prevent you from completing the final chapter. It will be the best way to experience the game when it's finished, but right now, it's a double-edged sword.

I didn't even know mouselook was part of the original Dark Forces, since the game automatically targets opponents that are above or below you, though only when you're close enough.

Anyway, does anyone know if there is a way to invert the Y axis in Dark Forces 2? Having to pull the mouse down in order to look up makes the game unplayable to me ... (am I controlling a jedi or a plane? :P)
Edited - I misread the above post and thought it was for Original DF. Sorry.
Yes - i had the same problem in DF2 and changed the Y axis mappings in the "setup" option from the main menu.

SETUP > CONTROLS > MOUSE

then select Yaxis option and put an "X" in the REVERSE box.

Hope this helps.

Yes, with your instructions I managed to fix it, thanks! I had already messed around with the Invert Axis buttons on the right, but silly me overlooked that those are not general settings but dependent on what you select on the left. A bit unintuitive, but I guess a smarter person would have been able to figure it out by themselves ... :D

Now I just need to find out how to make the environment scroll more smoothly when I move the mouse. There seems to be some barely noticeable stuttering which makes the environment move in tiny gradual steps rather than really fluently. It's playable but it makes me a little nauseous, even though I don't usually suffer from motion sickness ... (And it doesn't seem connected to mouse sensitivity.)

In case anyone is interested, this is a thing for Dark Forces.

Not hating on DarkXL, but if it doesn't do it for you, this might help. It's essentially a Dark Forces config with the keys bound to play more like a modern FPS and it includes and automatic GlovePie script for mouse look and scrolling through weapons. It's set up so that GlovePie launches with the tool and unloads itself when you quit the game. Fairly straightforward. More info in the OP of that thread.

Air70: many thanks for DarkXL!!!! I can enjoy the game now

cheers
It makes it mostly playable. Not necessarily completable.

That project really needs to get updated.

Marrik: i was able to rebind the keys by opening Launch Settings in the Dark Forces game folder

Leroux: Ah, that solution is much simpler and also suitable for the purists. Thanks! :)
Did you get this to work successfully? I will not let me map free buttons and the second joystick does not work still.

Honestly, I don't remember. Could be I just got accustomed to the default controls? I never played Dark Forces 2 though, I gave up on that because I didn't feel like trying to fix it and it was unplayable for me in its default state.

Marrik: how do i remap the keys?

also, how do i use mouselook?
Like most games of the DOS era you need to run setup.exe. For this you need to start DOSBOX without autostarting the game. Navigate to the install folder of dark forces, for example C:\GOGgames\Star Wars - Dark Forces. Then goto the DOSBOX folder and start DOSBox.exe
Now we first need to "mount" the location. Enter:

mount c "C:\GOGgames\Star Wars - Dark Forces"

(replace C:\GOGgames with the location on your system)
Enter:

C:

To go to the newly mounted folder, and start the setup:

setup.exe

The setup tool wil open and you can configure the keyboard using the menu "Configure Controller Setup" and then "Configure Keyboard"

A modern configuration would look like this:
Turn Right - Right Arrow (you won't be using this, we'll use the mouse)
Turn Left - Left Arrow (you won't be using this either)
Forward - W
Backward - S
Fire Primary - T (you won't be using this, we'll use the left mouse button)
Crouch - Control
Nudge - E (this is for activating buttons etc)
Jump - Space
Strafe Left - A
Strafe Right - D
Strafe Mode - Alt (you won't be using this)
Speed Mode - Left Shift
Slow Mode - Caps Lock (is useful on ice and narrow ledges)
View Up - R (unfortunately you can't use the mouse for this) To look straight forward again use 5 on the numeric keyboard, this key can't be reconfigured :(
View Down - F

Then also configure the Mouse:
Mouse - Enable
Turn Left / RIght - X Axis
Forward / Backward - <None>
Forward - <None>
Backward - <None>
Fire - Left Button
Crouch - <None>
Nudge - <None>
Jump - <None>
Strafe Mode - <None>
Speed Mode - <None>
Slow Mode - <None>

When you exit setup the configuration will be saved to disk. Now start Dark Forces as usual and enjoy!

Thanks Marien, this has been the best solution for me.
Thanks Marien. Works flawlessly
Instead of typing the mount command and running setup in DOSBox, you can simply open the game folder and the folder with dosbox.exe in side by side windows and drag setup.exe onto dosbox.exe. It'll automatically mount setup.exe's folder and then run setup.exe.

Didn't work for me... It says:
" stub exec failed:
dos4gw.exe
no such file or directory."

Nevermind got it.
Thanks for the tip.

My problem was that I didn't for some reason have a settings launcher, only a game launcher on my 'STAR WARS - Dark Forces' folder.
I solved it creating a new one as follows:

-Go to folder 'Star Wars - Dark Forces'.
-Duplicate the file 'Launch STAR WARS - Dark Forces'
-Change the name of the duplicate to something you like for example 'Launch settings'
-Right click the new file, choose properties.
-Change in the command 'Target': where it says: 'dosbox_DF_single.conf' with 'dosbox_DF_settings.conf'.
-Apply and OK.

Just double click the new file and you have the settings menu.
