Has anyone figured out how to install the DarkXL for the GOG version of Dark Forces? I recently purchased it here and was hoping to get it to run. I tried using the Steam setup guide, but the folders are organized differently.

a step-by-step guide would be great, if possible.

Thanks in advance!
If you are in no particular hurry, you should wait for the new version of XLEngine before playing with DarkXL. The new version should come out any day now unless something dramatic happens. You can stay up to date with XLEngine progress at http://xlengine.com/

Alright, thanks for the heads up!
I can confirm that DarkXL works great with the GOG version of Dark Forces! I was playing it yesterday, and having a blast with it. Here's what I did:

1. Download and install XL Engine.
2. Open the XL Engine launcher. Click the Dark Forces icon on the bar on the left.
3. Point it to your Dark Forces directory.*
4. Click Play. This launches DarkXL.

*The first few times I ran DarkXL, all I got was an unresponsive white screen. I then copied my Dark Forces installation somewhere else on my hard drive, pointed DarkXL to that, and it worked. My guess is the path was too long, so if you can't get it to work, maybe try that.

For what it's worth, there does not seem to be anything unusual about the GOG version of the game. As far as I can tell, it's basically the contents of the DARK directory on the original CD, along with a pre-configured version of DOSBOX for launching the game. So, in theory, anything that requires a copy of the game should work with the GOG version.

Apologies for the bump, but I can't figure out how to get DarkXL working on the GOG version

I can't point the XLauncher to the DARK file

I tried all of this, but the game crashes shortly after that, the game crashes
For those of you (like me) who had to look around for a place to download XL Engine, there's an Internet Archive page (archive.org/details/XLEngineRelease02 (sorry, I can't post links)) that looks like the best place to download it at the moment. The xlengine.com website appears to be down and has been for the last few days (at least; it seems like the project hasn't been worked on in a while).
One of the main people who worked on DarkXL died over a year ago, and the whole project seems DOA at the moment.
Sorry for the bump but no source port has come out right? I just tried to use DarkXL but the launcher despite having tabs that say otherwise has no option to configure anything, i have some bare bones options on the menu within the game but is not much, and with this source port you dont even have the "use" function, i press the spacebar and the character jumps instead of using stuff and opening doors...
I hink DarkXL is dead. But you can read many interesting things here:

Despite the website has gone defunct, DarkXL still works for me. So awesome!

NVM I fixed it.

This probably has been covered elsewhere, but in case someone wanders in here in search for updates - there are currently two projects still up and running modding DF - one is the Dark Forces launcher https://df-21.net/?post=57 which among things like modern control allows you to play fan made mission packs. There's a LOT of them and they are all pretty awesome IMHO.

The second one more pertinent to this thread is called the Force Engine - https://theforceengine.github.io/. It does what DarkXL used to do and more. Probably the best way to play DF1 today, if you are not a retro purist that is.

Hope this is of some help.
