Dark Forces 2 crashes when I fight through Nar Shadaa and I get to see the Imperial Lander. When the video starts up it exits the game and I can hear the sound of the video talking but can't get to it or back in to the game. If I go for task manager in 1/2 occasions the game locks up the system and I have to do hard reset. As it seems at the moment im going to have to go for a refund on this one.

Crashes when saving the game are also very common.

Using Win 8.1

Yeah I'm having the exact same problem.
I had this problem too (I'm on Windows 8.1)

I found disabling cut scenes in-game in the options menu allowed me to get around it. You can watch the cut scenes outside of the game, through the main menu.

For me it helped, to keep the window active and wait until the video is over (you hear when it is over).
So at this point you just have to press escape and the game maximizes again and you can keep playing.
Unfortunately I could not figure out how to watch the video.

Thanks for that. Yeah the game seems to work if I disable the cutscenes. Save crashes are still there but its bearabale now.
