GOG chose to encode the cd audio track to 192 kb/s ogg files. Besides the fact, that there is no reason today not to use 320 kb/s files, they also included a few tracks with distortions (especially track 32.ogg).

Until GOG fixes this, this thread offers 320 kb/s music files for both the main game "Jedi Knight" encoded by myself and the expansion "Mysteries of the Sith", thanks to octiceps:

MotS:

How to use them:

Simply extract the ogg files into your MUSIC folder, which is in your Jedi Knight game folder, and overwrite the existing files.

Enjoy :)

ORIGINAL POST:

The gog version has all music files as ogg files with 192kb/s.

Sadly they have been ripped without quality control. Especially the last track (track 32) has a lot of distortions. Others have this as well.

These definitely have to be improved. And while doing it please provide a higher bitrate. Size does not matter any more so we should use all the quality the original discs have to offer.

I will send this to the GOG service staff as well.

PS: I'm wondering why nobody noticed this before. But then, sound has always been the stepchild of gaming. Graphics first... :/

EDIT:

I cannot wait so I grapped my original discs and did a new rip myself. I converted them to wav and then to 320kb/s ogg files. They are now about 100 MB in size but I believe that size should not matter any more these days when new games can have 30 GB and more.

Just download the archive, decompress the music folder (named "MUSIC") into your JK game folder and overwrite the old one. There you are: Music without distortions. To be fair: Only a few files in the GOG release had issues but now all files, issues or not, have better quality. For those who have the equipment to actually hear it. Im looking at YOU, laptop user with lousy speakers ;)

Added a link to my ogg files in the first post.
This is only for DF2 or for MotS as well?
I wish the tracks were in flac format. Sure, they'd be bigger, but barring a bad rip, there would be no distortions whatsoever. You'd have all the glory that the people with the CD's have.
Until now only for JK. I don't own MotS on disc, so I have to check if the game uses new tracks or just recylces the ones from JK. If it has new tracks, I will have to get my hands on the disc somehow...

Yeah, flac would be nice but 320kb/s ogg files is enough for me...at least for my equipment.

Sadly 160kb/s MP3s...worse than GOG's version...at least regarding the bitrate.

TBH: I don't know if there are any problems with MotS audio files (besides the bitrate, which is "only ok" with 192 kb/s)

I picked that bitrate because it's the same bitrate Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy use for their music. No distortions though, so it's not too bad

Definitely not very high quality, though.

I can rip them all to .flac if enough people want it. I don't have the GoG version of JK though so I don't know which track number is which file there. Unless someone is willing to temporarily upload the GoG music folder for me

Nice, you are Tarvis from the same linke, the Steam Forums, right? :)

Yeah it would be cool to have the music in best possible quality.
I can zip you the MUSIC folder and upload it to DROPBOX, but right now I have only JK installed not MoTS.

* * *

OK. Done, here is the whole MUSIC folder from JK:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/uo0upq8gxpvub84/AAAFMCLmtrWHa3OnnuGA_csKa?dl=0

filsize: 59 MB
format: 7z (use 7-zip or anything modern, that can open/extract this format)

Please wait 10 minutes until the package uploads itself.

Well, my equipment is actually just fine with the present .oggs, but it's the thought that counts.

By objective measurable criteria the music quality of the game in 1995 was better than it's re-release in 2015. This is to save maybe about 150MB of disk space. It is not a trade that makes any sense at this point in history. Why bother with just increasing the bitrate, when you can just as easily go all the way.

EDIT: by "you" I mean gog.com, who presumably decided to go with ogg instead of .flac.

I have original MotS CD. I can rip the tracks and post link to download them here. What format and bit rate you want them in?
Post edited February 01, 2015 by octiceps
Ogg (because GOG chose that format) and 320 kb/s. No volume adjustment or some other fancy tweaking, just the tracks converted to 320 kb/s ogg files.
Here you go: mediafire.com/?6r477m5sr62re4h
Great work, though you have to rename them like this:

First track: Track02.ogg
Second track: Track03.ogg
...
Last track: Track14.ogg
