I know that 2 versions of Starfleet Academy came out for the PC: the regular 5 disc CD-ROM copy, and a DVD copy with higher quality cutscenes. Which version is gog offering for sale here? Thanks.

Because the game is 2.3 GB big, I don't think that they have the DVD-Version on gog

What I wanne know is, does it work with Windows 8/8.1 and D3D?
Last I tried my CD-Version of the game with Windows XP, D3D always crashed.

The system reqs say that Windows 8 is supported and it requires DirectX, so I think you're all set. (If not, that's what GOG's money back guarantee is for!)

I am running 8.1 and I started a new game with no issues, clicked around for a few minutes, and had no lag or glitches at all, with the exception of a relatively choppy mouse.

After downloading and installing, the visuals seem almost in-line with the CD-ROM copy and are almost exactly as I remember them. The game does however come pre-patched to 1.15, which has the shield indicator and other features that were implemented in that patch.

The game does not come with Chekov's Lost Missions, but hopefully that'll be a free add-on later.

Bummer. Well I hope GoG can get their hands on the DVD version and are able to make it work. It's as rare as hen's teeth, but given the game's focus on video, having it in DVD quality would be really nice.
I own both versions of Starfleet Academy and I was able to run them both. Sadly the DVD version isn't that great after all. It was one of the first game using mpeg2 cutscenes and the quality was worse than the CD movies. No anamorphic video and color bleeding combined with less sharpness :( So, IMO not worth it. Stick to the disc version.

Actually the original was ~2.3 gigs total on the CD version. Almost all of it was the movies in the game. I'm from the original dev team. Also I had nothing to do with this release and will be checking it out when I get home and make the purchase.

Interesting I got both original CD and the DVD version also.

What operating system did you use to do the comparison of both versions?

I don't know if it really is "that" rare but I got a DVD version. I don't know if GOG can get an ISO of mine for updating the CD version on GOG. Or if they can only do it directly with whomever owns the rights to the game now.

Old thread, but wanted to confirm, the GOG version of Starfleet Academy is the CD-ROM version and NOT the enhanced DVD version released later? That's a bummer, as having the videos in as high quality as is available would have been nice.

This is correct.
Could please somebody contact me who has the DVD Version (or the ISO)?

Maybe we could simply swap the videos and create an unofficial video-upgrade patch...

Update 17.06.2021:
I released the CD->DVD Upgrade pack

Enjoy!
