There is a patch to run the DVD-Version under Windows XP. The patch seems to be working under Windows 7 x64. I tried to configure it unter Windows 10 #2004 a moment ago - after some experimenting, I got everything prepared for a test run (also updated the readme):

I cannot test it myself, hence I am missing the DVD Version. If somebody can point me to a DVD Version (or ISO) I could try the patch and also put some time into creating an CD->DVD Movie upgrade pack.

Just to clarify: You won´t need the specific hardware anymore to play the movies/the game (and AFAIK there was also an identical DVD-Version not bundled with any specific DVD-ROM+MPEG2 Card from Creative but bundled with Gateway PCs) but I am not 100% sure if that version was ever sold seperately. Information on the internet varies.

Sadly GOG was never able to release the DVD Version (or Chekov's Lost Missions - Addon which never got a DVD-Release). Maybe that changes sometime in the future...

I only have the federation compilation of it, where both the Main Game and the Addon are included as seperate CD-ROMs not sure though if that is of any help for you.

I own both - SFA and the Addon - myself on CD. So it won´t help. Thanks for replying anyway.

I am explicitly looking for the DVD Version (any DVD-Version, originally bundled or not), which seems to be really difficult to aquire. So please contact me if you are one of the rare possessors.

I have sadly never been able to find the DVD version, not even on Ebay (this seems to be as or even more rare than the Kilrathi Saga box set was for a time). If you ever do manage to get your hand on the DVD or an ISO, I would understand if you don't share it due to questionable legality, but I feel a CD>DVD Movie Upgrade patch would be 100% legal (since it'd require owning the game in the first place) and I'd be VERY interested to see if the DVD movies really look better.
