NatureDruid: What are the differences? Is there any point in buying this one instead of getting the other for free?

l3l3l5l: These are two very different pieces of software and accompanying digital packaging:

1) SC2 on GOG is a commercial product which (presumably) went through design, quality assurance, installer and documentation packaging, etc. So if you trust GOG , think they are reliable, confirmed game dealer with level of responsibility which satisfies you - this is the version for you. They are also supposed to provide you with support in case you get problems.

2) UQM is a dedicated fans community project which is v0.7 at the moment. This means that this is the most versatile version of the game one might get (because it's developed by fans who really really care), but it's not a final product until it's 1.0. The community won't charge you and hence have little to none responsibility with regards to problems you might get when playing the game. And they are supposed to not care whether you have problems or not. It may be different in reality, I'm not familiar with their discussion board goings.
This is completely and utterly false.

SC2 is a commercial product released 1992 for DOS. In 1994 the game was ported to a console, with the addition of video, voice, and animations... although sadly 3DO only got professionals working on code, the voiceovers were done by the coders and their family for basically nothing.

in 2002 the 3DO version was made open source (because the original source code was lost and 3DO version is all they had). This resulted in the original composers coming back and redoing the music using modern equipment for free, and many fans helped update the game for modern operating systems. In addition to that, they have made the 3DO contributions optional. So you can enjoy it as either the original DOS game or the 3DO version, or mix and match what you want from each version. (for example, maybe you want the animations from 3DO but not the voiceovers, it is your choice). They also ported it to a very wide variety of operating systems.

GOG on the other hand, as a policy only applies the most critical fixes to the original games to make them work at all... and that is it. No gameplay bugs are ever fixed, no new content is added. Just fix it so it works as well as the original did back in 1992.

In short, the UQM version is in fact a "real commercial product", it was actually a real commercial product twice (original version and then 3do version). It has just been made free and open source afterwards. And it also by far the superior version in terms of quality. And it even has an HD mod in development which is amazing.
Also, I have played it a lot and it is rock stable.

Wow..
I agree that The Ur-Quan Masters is indeed excellent.
Are there any plans to add a quest log or full message log (not just the current dialogue) to this? That would make an otherwise great game so much better I think.

Couple of other things that could be added:
-Slight graying out of fully explored dialogue branches
-Being able to mark explored stars or planets on the star map (and perhaps an on/off toggle for these markers)

Edit:
Is there a way to toggle higher game speed or fast-forward during auto-pilot travel between systems?
