I own the original copy and notices that the GOG.com version must have been modified / patched / hacked to not allow EAX to be enabled.

On a real retro gaming PC with a Geforce 4 and Audigy, EAX simply can't be enabled.

However on my original copy it works fine as per image: http://i.imgur.com/aTHslbK.png

So if you are wondering about this setting: Don't get worked up over it. GOG.com disabled it.
Hey Phil,

After doing some testing, it turns out that the retail (and presumably Steam) version of Splinter Cell does indeed support EAX on actual hardware...

Until you install the 1.3 patch.

Once you do that, then the EAX support is disabled. I'm pretty sure this was Ubi Soft's doing as of way back in 2005.

This also means that there's currently no possible way to play the extra missions with EAX support, so they're going to sound a lot worse than on the Xbox.

So ideally, GOG would actually have the 1.2 patch as default and make the 1.3 version and the extra missions available as a separate download to get around this issue.

Edit: Does anybody know how I might present this as a suggestion to the GOG staff by the way?

Thank you. I was under the impression that these should only be used for game-halting incompatibilities, not really suggestions like I'm doing here.

Well there's submit your own solution, but I don't consider a suggestion to default to the 1.2 patch as your own solution. Regardless, sending in either type of ticket is the only way to expect GOG to actually see your suggestion.
