I've have looked at the SpellForce Series before during sales but I always passed it up in favor of pure RPGs. With the games leaving the catalog I decided to give them one final look.

I know the games are a mix of RPG and RTS so I'm curious how this blend turned out.

is the RPG aspect an afterthought or is it well thought out?

Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

An RPG can be defined as a game that features a persistent character (or characters) that is (are) developed through player-driven, consequential choices -- note that story is irrelevant. Nothing else is required to make an RPG, and any game without those elements is not an RPG. Now that's out of the way, Spellforce fulfills the criteria more than adequately. It's an RPG, and it's a good RPG (definitely not an afterthought), but it's not deep. Banter and interaction is either minimal or non-existent, for example. I recommend you grab them while you can. They are great games.

Thanks for the quick response Hickory. I ended up purchasing the entire SpellForce series.

Now I just need to decide if I want to pick up the Guild Series. I already have Guild II and the expansions on Steam so I'm debating if its worth buying them a second time.
