Any why do you think so?

Different types of freeform gameplay, not really comparable.

Though I'd say the Space Rangers games appeal to a larger crowd. So that means there will be more people in here claiming SR > X.
Yeah, these series have nothing in common beyond being set in space.

That said, I think the X3: Terran Conflict is easily the best game out of both series, and since both series are pretty much entirely iterative (each release takes the previous one and adds more stuff) I'd say X3 is worth playing over Space Rangers 2 Reboot (the newest version of that series). It's got a more impressive scope, more depth, and more interesting ways to play.

Of course, again... totally different series. Get both, and if you can only get one it'd be nice to know what kind of things you're looking for.
was hoping for something like Star Control 2, that is really open ended, lots of customizing ships , and lots of exploring.

They both have those things, but in different ways. If you put a gun to my head I'd say Space Rangers 2 is more like Star Control (but still not much like it at all), while the X series is an obvious and direct descendant of Elite, Privateer and Freelancer.
This is a very simple answer, and indeed it is the answer to end all other possible answers.

The best one would be, most assuredly, Space Rangers X-3.

Tell me I'm wrong . . . . . . .

Yeah, X-3 is everything Freelancer could have been, and Freelancer is everything X-3 should never have left out.
