You aren't likely to get a majority decision here. :P

I love 2000 and 4 though A LOT of people swear by 3000, which I found to be kind of a pain.
It really depends on what you're looking for.

If you want to obsess over every detail of the city, 4 is your place to be.

If you want something charming and relaxing, SimCity 3000 with that smooth jazz is the place to be. Great rainy day game.

If you want glorious pixel art and scenarios like an actual game, SimCity 2000 is your place.

For some reason, transportation in #3 was a lot harder for me. There were no El trains and the bus traffic was really really wonky; I couldn't seem to find any rhyme or reason to number or placement.

I kind of have an urge to play it now though. :P

There is Subway to Rail so you can shunt it all underground instead?

I need to go back to it. I know I had a problem with it but I can't remember.

One thing that always confused me, does the Subway to rail handle both rail and subway (does it act as BOTH rail and sub stations) or is it just a transition?

Good question. Let me ask my good man Manuel.

Ahem. He says, "Subway to Rail Connection: This station allows Sims to transfer from rail to subway, making your city’s Mass Transit options more versatile."
I think the originial, 2000 and 4 are the best. I own and played 3000 but it seemed middle of the road for me

I love the extras on 4.

I has nothing to do with city building, but being able to cruise around the streets is fun.

Rush hour was probably the greatest expansion for the series.
Honestly i love Simcity 2000 but I prefer 3000 unlimited a good childhood game
2K is the most polished, but also the simplest and has the fewest features. 4K has the most features, but also has a lot of questionable design decisions, oversights, and poor systems implementations (the region mechanic is just a big clusterfudge that doesn't work correctly. It's cool for the first hour or so, but you quickly realize the game would have been better without it). 3K is a middle-ground between the two.

Basically the series got more ambitious and technically complex between each iteration, but the implementation and delivery fell further behind.
