I have never played this game, but reading about it, I've read there's a problem in a part of the game involving a bell, that doesn't let you continue. I don't know exactly what is the problem, can anybody describe it?

Also, does the GOG version has this problem, or fixed?

I'm interested in this game, but if that problem exists, I think I'll pass.

Thanks in advance for any information :)

At one point in the game there is a timing puzzle where you're supposed to ring a bell several times at specific intervals, but on newer machines this part is impossible to pass (I'm guessing due to a mismatch between how the timing code was written and the newer, faster CPU clock speeds) with the only way past being to get a hold of and load a save that was created at a save point after the puzzle.

Hopefully the GOG version has fixed this.

I'm very interested in this game (never played it before), but I'm also waiting for a reply regarding this bell problem.
I also noticed a mismatch of the gametime in the tutorial: Your grandfather commands you to perform certain moves and as soon as you execute them he comments on it, interrupting the animations in the process. So if there wasn't a patch to the specific bell-code-problem, it might very well still exist. Though I'm not at that part yet.

Thanks for the info, Keiler! Please keep us updated, ok? If this isn't solved, we can try asking GOG to fix it.

EDIT: this guy mentions a fix:

There are also a few errors in the game (not in every Silver game). If you experience any
troubles during gameplay: eg. error messages or the bell under the sewer that doesn't work,
check out:

http://www.gamekey.com/vp3d/silverfix

You'll find some UNOFFICIAL PATCHES there and solutions to for bugs.

But the link he provides doesn't work :(

On Gamefaqs board, someone linked to a save file right after the bell scene. I don't know if it works, but you may check it out:

If anyone else could confirm or deny what I've found it would be nice. Guess I'll hunt down a save game to swap to.

*Edit, managed to do it* post below.

Frau_Savage: I have just reached this section and the problem still seems to exist. I ring the bell three times and David nods to show it's correct, but no matter how I do the next two rings there is no nod.

Check my previous post, I've provided a link to a save. I don't know if it works, though.

Bummer... :(
I've just alt-tabbed out after managing to do it. The key for me was starting the next set of rings while David was still nodding to signify correct entry, which is very little pause. I've edited my previous post to strike-through my failure text. It works, but it does seem difficult.

Great, now I can buy the game! Thanks for the feedback!

The bell sequence was always confusing. I remember entering the code over and over, searching for the right timing. Good to know it works eventually.
Normaly I would have already tried it myself, but I'm distracted with a certain other hack'n'slay that got released this week. ;-)

I just tried this and can confirm that it works. However, I'd still say that the bell puzzle is by far the hardest part of the game:D
Yea the timing for this puzzle is tricky but it works in the gog version.
I've not been able to get the second nod after about an hour of trying. I tried the gamefaqs save file but I don't know where the Silver save files are to put it in. Any other non hacked save game files out there?
You have to put the file into the SILVER\SAVEGAME directory.
Right click on the silver icon on the desktop, then properties to find the full path out.
