I have played Civ 4 Beyond the Sword, but not Civ 3. I like Civ 4 Beyond the Sword but some of you prefer Civ 3. Before I consider buying Civ 3, I would like to know why some of you like Civ 3 more that Civ 4.

Probably because it's a rush city spam landgrabbing Civilization game that makes for short, quick and intensive games for those that doesn't like epic, big and slow Civilization games.
I like both. Civ4 with mods has lots of depth, Civ3 is quicker to jump into and has nostalgic value. Also, Civ3 is less of a resource hog on my PC...
To me Civ3 have a more classic civilization feeling. 4 might be better in many ways but it is kind of bloated and comes with ugly cartoonish graphics.
I love both 3 and 4.
I have to admit that the only reason I just bought 3 was pure nostalgia. I consider 4 to be a superior experience.
I prefer Civ3 too. It has more "classic" look and feel, and it's not so overfilled with (dubious?) features as Civ4 (mainly "religion" concept comes into mind).
Thank you all for responding to my posting. I now understand why some prefer Civ 3 over Civ 4, and that some enjoy playing both games. I have to agree that there is allot of content in Civ 4, which I enjoy. But there are times when I get tired of playing a long Civ 4 game games. I will continue to play Civ 4, but will also buy Civ 3 for those times when I want to play shorter and less complex games. Thank you again for all of your replies.

You can also check out the scenarios in Civ 4. They are great fun, and some are much shorter than the usual stone-age to modern age custom game. The viking raids one for example is brilliant, and uses slightly different graphics. The Africa trade routes one as well if I remember correctly.

Cool. I used to ignore them thinking they can't possibly be as fun as the main game. Suffice to say I was dead wrong :)
From what I've seen and read, every Civ has its own following for its own subtle reasons (apart from nostalgia). You'll still see fans swearing Civ2 is the best. You'll still see people just migrating to whichever Civ is the newest. It all comes down to gameplay preference.
I really like how generals are handled in CIV 3 over 4. In Civ 3, an army led by a general becomes very powerful and (at least for me), I quite enjoy rampaging through multiple enemy cities (kind of like the feel when playing RISK).
