Have I forgotten this aspect, or is it worse with the Complete Edition? I'm playing on Warlord, and got stuck on an island where I could fit 7 measly cities.....come to find in later ages, the AI just about all got big land masses and have what seems like 50 cities!!!!! Crazy.. I don't recall this from Civ 3. I do know 3 was my least favorite after playing Civ 1 and 2, and when 4 came out, I quickly put 3 to bed.

My laptop has graphical issues and will be put to bed by year's end, but not just yet. Can't get Civ 5 or 4 to run.
So, figured I'd play 3....but starting to wonder if it's even worth my time, if the AI gets these sorts of advantages on even the easier difficulties.

I am quite sure I was a even steven player...guess that's Monarch with 3....I just don't recall this crap.

I think Regent is where the AI doesn't get any bonuses or maluses compared to the player. On Warlord, they require 1.5x more shields than you do to produce a given thing.

Early on the AI are very, very settler happy (and you should be too). Just don't be dumb and plop cities in the middle of tundra in an attempt to fulfill your city number quota, something which the AI does.

One of your first cities, one with a decent food and shield output, should focus mostly on making settlers.
You might start on a small island at any difficulty. I guess that the world generator isn't fair, and doesn't make the same size island for every player. If you change the difficulty from Monarch to something else, it might change how the AIs play the game, but not how the game generates the world. If you don't like your island, then try a new game on a different world.

You might even play the same world at different difficulty levels, if you know the seed. Start a new game, and in the "Choose a world" screen, enter the same seed and settings as before. In the next screen, choose any difficulty. (I got Civ3 recently. I haven't generated a world yet; I'm playing a scenario with a fixed world.)

Yep, popcorning is the optimum strat in Civ 3. Really takes some of the fun out of things.
That is the way to play Civ 2 and 3. The AI don't need any bonuses to do this. While it was good for the series to limit this I like both this way of playing and the more limited mechanics of the later games.

None of the games after Civ 3 give you the feeling of building up a huge empire and waging war a on large scale. Especially if you play on a huge or even larger map =)

That's exactly what I miss most. I've only played Civ 5 for a few weeks, and none of 4 and 6 other than a little tryout.

Thankfully I've moved on to EU IV, it has filled all my megalomaniac needs :P
Ah Europa Universalis IV. I'd love to sit down and play that and Crusader Kings 2. Too many games and not enough time. I wish GOG could start selling some DRM-free time!
