Hi,

The game ran perfectly until now, but it crashes on a sunspot activity event that happens around 2375. I think I tried all the solutions proposed on this forum (downloading the patches, modifying the ini file, changing the keyboard settings, changing the resolution), but the game constantly crashes when it informs me that sunspot activities will prevent faction communications. So, am I screwed? (I have Windows 7)

Thanks in advance!

First thought is that some file associated with sunspot activity has become corrupted. If you can post a save file from just before the crash, we can see if the game crashes on other systems. Perhaps you could post the file to a file-sharing site and then link to it here.

Here's the save file from 2375. The sunspot activity happens in 2376. Once I click OK, the game freezes for about 2 seconds, then the crash window appears.

Edit: the save file is for Alien Crossfire.

Thanks for posting the save. I found the source of the c rash and it's not the sunspot message. Your game contains four "oddball" units that sometimes appear for unknown reasons and cause crashes. You can delete these units, but doing so requires use of the scenario editor. If you use the scenario editor, you won't receive a score or Hall of Fame entry for the game, but you should be able to continue. Here's how to eliminate the units in question:

1. Open the scenario editor by pressing Ctrl-k.
2. The units are located at the coordinates (32,46), (10,16), (19,13), and (24,12).
3. Right-click on each unit and select the delete option.
4. Press the "y" key to hide the unrevealed portions of the map.

The game should now proceed without crashing. Further crashes may be caused by more of these units appearing. If so, find and delete them as above.

I don't think that anyone has identified why these units appear or how to avoid them. However, I'll check on another forum to see if anyone has additional information.

Awesome, I'm now in 2377. Thanks a lot for your help! But how do you know which units are "oddball?"

Just from experience. The unit in question doesn't appear in an unmodified unit workshop. You can find it in the upper left corner of units.pcx.
