Once or twice in the early game (even in the very first city) I've been building something really simple like a colony pod and the last few blocks in the Production Status screen turn red. The estimate doesn't go up, and there's no warning shown like there is for "no minerals." I don't seem to be able to shift it by moving workers around to different resources, and the resources claim to be in surplus anyway, so I'm not sure...

a) What causes it
b) what harm it does.

Anyone know?

That is an indication that you have an oversupply of resources for that unit. It does no harm other than being a slight inefficiency - If you wanted to avoid that, you could change production to a more expensive unit. In the early game, that will most likely be a former unit, i always build those first to take advantage of the bonus resources.

Moving worked tiles around changes future production values, but it will not change production values for this issue because this issue relates to production that is already produced!

Brilliant, thank you. Also explains why I don't notice it often as I also usually build expensive things whilst it's quiet in the early game. On this occasion it had put me RIGHT next to Miriam so I had to bulld a garrison soonest. (Which didn't help in the end but did mean I had quite a lot of units when the game eventually evacuated me to an empty island.)
Good for you!

I restart a new game immediately upon discovering Miriam nearby.
I figure why waste time with a lost game?
Unless i am playing Gaians, then i simply destroy Mirium with captured mindworms. But i dont usually play Gaians because they are way too over powered with that ability and a player that knows how to exploit it.
