This is really annoying both SMAC and AX do the same thing - the game mostly works fine- but the game doesn't seem to 'tick' unless it's getting input from the mouse - e.g. I'll click 'End Turn' and absolutely nothing will happen unless I move the mouse or hit the keyboard - it's like the game freezes, till it gets some mouse/kb input to wake it up.

But this doesn't just happen on every 'end turn', but for every AI controled unit that wants to move - makes the game very annoying to play.

I'm running it within a Win10 64-bit instllation - any known work around for this? I can't find anything searching google or the forums?

Are you running it in compatibility mode?

I've tried the most aggressive compat mode settings I can think of, e.g. Win95, admin rights, etc. Just updated by AMD drivers as well, to no avail.

Have you added: DirectDraw=0 to the bottom of 'Alpha Centauri.ini'?

I might be wrong Dave,

but I do remember a setting (sorry) somewhere like wait for AI? wait for AI movement? or something like that. maybe this is activated?

Hi, no it's not that - it's very perculiar - literally, the game freezes all activity between unit actions till the mouse or keyboard is active - even push the shift key is enough to make the game continue and move the next unit. Animations, everything freezes until less the mouse is moved (not clicked! just moved) or a key is pushed. Very annoying!

Nope - just tried that - it's making SMAC run at the same resolution as my desktop, but the weird pausing between animations is still happening.

Now it looks great, but it's still barely playable!

wembleyford: snip
hmmm.....

2 things jumping to my mind:
1.) directx9 properly installed?
2.) directplay properly installed?

Why am I saying properly, especially for directplay I read that antivirus can screw up the installation for this. So may worthwhile reinstalling both with AV turned off. (And seems only to be the case for Win10, not any other win-version)

For dirextx, don't use the webinstaller but the offline package, yes on ms available as well, if you need links let me know ;)

Dito for how to check for directplay.

But otherwise, nothing I can really think off. Even not like dxwin or similar as the game IS running....only this quirky behaviour......

Nope - none of that worked... What -did- work, was a setting I remember from way back when when I first played this.

ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1

Fixed it.

Weird...
