I'm having the same problem as some XP users on here that have gotten their problem solved, just with Win-specific instructions. I'm hoping someone can walk me through the Mac version. When I start the game it gets as far as selecting which game you want to play and then it crashes with a, "The program terranx.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. Sorry." message.
Some other advice that seems to work is to disable the intro movie. How do I do that on a Mac?

I believe the same way as in Windows - find and open Alpha Centauri.ini file and disable the opening movie
by changing 0 to 1.

DisableOpeningMovie=0

I searched for that. Do you know where I'd find it? With a Mac, a lot of applications have their associated files hidden and you have to select the app and select 'Show package contents.' I tried searching there already, as well as in application support. I've also tried using the search function and it didn't bring up anything.
Go to the Alpha Centauri / Alien Crossfire app where it is installed, right click and select Show package content. The ini file is located in drive_c/GOG Games/Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri/

Those are windows-specific instructions. The file structure on a Mac is not the same. Can someone answer this question with a solution for a Mac?
Sorry, that's what I found here - http://www.gogwiki.com/wiki/Sid_Meier%27s_Alpha_Centauri#Widescreen_support
You find Alpha Centauri.ini, when you open the game's package (select the app and select "Show package contents" like you already did) and browse the folder structure to drive_c/GOG Games/Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri/
The GOGWiki is correct on this.

Alternatively take a look if there's another version here:
~/Library/Application Support/GOG.com/Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri/Alpha Centauri.ini

Under [Alpha Centauri] set this line
DisableOpeningMovie=1
and under [PREFERENCES]
ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1

Setting DirectDraw=0 in the [Alpha Centauri] section, might also help:
[Alpha Centauri]
DirectDraw=0

It is not the same way. I have installed the game in applications, and when I open and look in the game files there are no .ini file.

Futhermore none of the file have a an DisableOpeningMovie parameter, so it seems a different workaround is needed on mac.
Hello,

I'm having the same problem. I upgraded X11 to the latest Xquartz (on El Capitan) just in case, but it didn't change anything.

My Alpha Centauri installation came without any Alpha Centauri.ini file, just a broken symlink pointing to ~/Library/Application Support/GOG.com/Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri/Alpha Centauri.ini.

I created a new ini file at this location (and checked that the symlink is no longer broken) with the lines you suggested, and played with the screen options in Wineskin.app, but nothing had any effect. The game just crashes a few seconds after the first dialog where you choose Alpha Centauri or Alien Crossfire.

So far I haven't found any other lead, so I'd be grateful for any help.
I'm experiencing the same problem, the game crashes to desktop once I selected Alien Xfire/AC from the menu.

On my installation, the ini file in here is a symlink into my Home directory (outside of the app bundle). The destination doesn't exist.
I spent some time with someone at GOG who made me try a couple of things, but nothing worked, we never got the game to launch past the first screen. In the end he gave up and offered me a refund. So I'm afraid the issue won't soon get fixed.
If you can't find the .INI file, check if this is what it's about:
