Is SMAX included with the game?

I don't think it is.

I guess this means no widescreen support. I think that was added with SMAX.

I still got my (german) copy of this game, but I don't own the expansion. So I will not buy it before the expansion is included

Perhaps they wanted to just get one of the most beloved games out there quickly? If that was true a quick statement about getting the whole Planetary Pack as soon as they could would make all the difference.

I wouldn't be surprised if EA's new 'Origin' store started selling the Planetary Pack at a huge markup.

Yeah, I want to play this but will wait for expansion. Hopefully it will come out soon.

IMO, content-wise the expansion is nothing special. Squidheads are a bit interesting, but all in all the new factions have nothing on the ideological perfection of the basic civs.

Of course, the widescreen issue is a perfectly valid argument, hopefully a patch/mod will fix it.

I am a first time poster here, and just wanted to say that I agree that this would be an instant purchase for me if the expansion was included - even if the game was bumped up to $9.99. I already have the original on disk and copies seem pretty easy to come by in the wild at Goodwill and the like, but I have never seen a copy of the expansion. I love GOG and have bought other games here, but for me the availability of the expansion makes or breaks the purchase of this game for me. I'm hoping there isn't some kind issue with the rights to the game preventing you from offering it, and that you are working on adding the expansion at a later date.
