baon: The newer versions of Wine seem to work fine (I have it in a v.2.5.4 wrapper and it seems to work)... BUT... I can only launch it from the GOG installer. I can't get it to run from any .exe file in the package. Anyone know what file is used by Windows to start it up? The Wine DB has the GOG version in particular with a platinum rating, but no notes on how to configure it.
It looks like my icon is linking to terran.exe Its in the main directory so I would think you would have already have tried it.
Minor sound glitches but the rest of the game works fine [whole game without a single crash]. Ubuntu 10.04 - Wine 1.4

Well is sure sounds like the success rate as improved considerably.
I can now confirm that SMAX [Retail version, SMAC 4.0+SMAX patch+WinXP patch] also works [full game].
I had it working perfectly (except for a few sound glitches) in Arch until last month, now it doesn't work anymore, tried downgrading wine and it didn't change anything, it doesn't work, not even after reinstalling.

Does it work now?
I don't have that computer anymore so I can't try, sorry.
Works well on archlinux, use playonlinux. It might have solved the music problem, but I'm not sure.

Works for me too, and I use LinuxMint.
I can confirm. It works on Ubuntu with PlayOnLinux. POL even have separate install mode "GOG.com: Alpha Centauri".
Seemed like I had it working in Mac OS 10.8 with wine installed via homebrew, but then crashed a minute in with a page fault. :( At least the GOG installer worked flawlessly, haha.

I'd really like to play on my laptop, and am interested in any suggestions. I've tried everything in this thread.

mac 10.7.5 here

i followed this guy's instructions
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=15001
seems to work.
It works in Wine 1.5 and probably earlier versions, but not flawlessly. I had a video about a wonder built by a different faction, and the screen was not redrawn properly. The game was still running, but inoperable, and I had to kill it.

Edit: after experimenting with wine settings I have no serious issues with the game any more.

setup_sid_meiers_alpha_centauri_2.0.0.19.exe requires gdiplus package to install SMAC. If You are using Play On Linux install it via "Install Packages" in configuration screen if not, use winetricks. SMAC and SMACX works for me [not a SINGLE crash, very minor sound glitches] with POL 4.1.8, Wine 1.4, Xubuntu 12.10.
