Hi all,

Two weird things when I want to use the 'higher resolution' option:

1: directdraw=0 does not work when I put it in. (Yes I've placed it under 'Alpha Centauri")
2: Look at how short my .ini list is: (No long list like the ones I've seen on this forum)

[Alpha Centauri]
ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1
[PREFERENCES]
ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1

I'ver tried to start a game because something a game will make a .ini file after a first game has started but nothing has changed.

Secondly the directdraw=0 wil match my desktop resolution which is 1920x1200 on a 17 inch laptop screen. Normally for old games I use the 1280x800 resolution because that's still a widescreen one but doesn't make al the text unreadable. So it's matching the desktop's resolution the only option? (IF I/we can get it to work)

Cheers
Wrong .ini probably, if you're on Vista or Win7 the 'real' .ini is probably in the virtualstore folder.

Try to tick the 'Run as Admin' checkbox on the game shortcut, boot the game again and check if the .ini in the game folder has changed.

You only need to have Voxel entry under [PREFERENCES], the one under [Alpha Centauri] is never used.

If you're using vista/win7 and installed to program files then real ini file will be found under virtualstore dir like Namur said. You can find that here:
C:\Users\<current user id>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\<SMAC dir>\

You could try other fixed res of 1024x768:
[Alpha Centauri]
Video Mode=1024

Also, directdraw=0 apparently doesn't work correctly with SMAC without the unofficial patch. If you do get unofficial patch, make sure to set ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm to 0.
Thanks both, that worked like a charm! (It was indeed in the virtualstore map like you said)

One thing though that does'n work and that's the video mode=XXX option.

I tried it without the directdraw=0 because I read that this overrides the video mode=XXX option but no success. I tried videomode=1280 and video mode=1280. (1280x800 is the lowest 16:10 widescreen resolution)

Any thoughts about this guys?

Edit: If I don't use 16:10 like 1280 of 1920 then I will get black border to the left and right side of the screen.

Video mode option only accepts 1024 or 800 as valid resolutions. It will ignore any others so you can't set it to 1280. You could always set desktop res to 1280 and use directdraw option. Or maybe if you have ati/nvidia card to make a profile for game.

Ahaaa... I'll give the creating a profile part a spin. Changing the desktop resolution to 1280 every time won't be an option so lets fiddle around with a custom profile for SMAC.

Thanks again :-)

Well I tried to create a custom profile for SMAC but I can't seem to find anywhere how I select a different desktop resolution in such a profile.

I tried it with the standard NVIDIA Profile tool, I tried installing NHancer but that won't even start and I tried the latest version of NVIDIA Inspector which let's me select a bucket load of options but not a different desktop resolution...

Any ideas?
Well, I could do a quick patch to override default res values and force game to use resolution of your choice. What res would you like? I'm just going to use copy of v1.0 of unofficial patch unless you specify otherwise. At some point I may look into expanding Video Mode option or some other method of allowing folks to set res other than two fixed ones or desktop.
