So because I figure i won't be able to play Beyond Earth when it releases (due to computer sepcs) I thought I'd play the original classic. bought it on the GOG sale, installed it but now I'm stuck. Does it matter if I run just Alpha Centauri or Alien Crossfire? I know Alien Crossfire is the DLC but is that the version to play?

I only wonder because it downloaded 2 games (normal AC and then Alien Crossfire) isntead of just having them combined... Thanks for answer me evetunally.

Launching Alpha Centauri allows you to play the game with the original, well balanced factions and tech tree. Launching Alien Crossfire gives you several new factions and some new tech. From what I hear, it can be difficult to start in Alien Crossfire if the map spawns one of the new factions nearby. I recommend starting with Alpha Centauri and after becoming familiar with it, trying out a new game with Alien Crossfire.
Okay, thanks!
FYI with the caveat that I just purchased the game. I did some digging online on this same question and a popular response was to play Alien Crossfire with the new factions disabled.
The expansions factions and tech tree are not well balanced.
