As many people on here have lamented, there are a lot of mods that are, for one reason or another, only available on Steam workshop, with no other downloads from other places such as Nexus.

After much searching, I've found a way to download these without requiring Steam (or a Steam account)!

1) Locate the page of the mod on Steam Workshop
2) Copy the URL of the mod from your browser (should look similar to this one here for Yakuza Legacy: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=238624442&searchtext=)
3) Go to this website*: http://steamworkshopdownloader.com/
4) Paste the URL you copied into the text box (above the "Download" button)
5) Push the "Download" button (might take a while to appear).
6) When it's ready, push the "Start Download" link. You may need to select "Save File" if your browser prompts you.
7) Locate the downloaded file, and add a ".zip" extension to it (it will typically contain a different extension or just be a random-looking filename with no extension at all).
8) Unzip the module to your Shadowrun Returns UGC area (as you would with any other SR UGC).

BTW, note that some UGC gets updated faster on Steam Workshop than it does on Nexus. The main one here is Shadowrun Unlimited, which is a number of updates behind on Nexus.

Note that the "gaddons" website is originally for addons developed for Garry's Mod - so all the other instructions (e.g. using GWTool) won't work for Shadowrun Returns (but it isn't needed anyway).

Hope this is helpful to you all.

EDIT: Updated website (above) and information on "generic" Steam workshop content (below).

* Note: Previously this was this website: http://gaddons.org/workshop, however that URL has now changed. Additionally, it was originally designed for "Garry's Mod", whereas the other one is more generic. Finally, the steamworkshopdownloader site also helpfully loads some info from the selected mod prior when it generates the download button - so it's more helpful and user friendly.

However, despite being "more generic" than the site I posted originally, the below information is still valid (though it's been slightly updated to be clearer).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A note on using this method for retrieving other UGC for other games:

This technique can, in theory, be used to retrieve and download ANY file on Steam workshop as described above (and should work for all other games too)! Woohoo!

However, this only applies to downloading the UGC in question. How easy it is to actually install into this other game is highly dependent on the other game. More specifically, the format the UGC file is on Steam Workshop (it won't necessarily be a zip file!) and how easy it is to install this into the game. It might be as easy as SRR, it might be another type of archive file that might just require identifying it and unpacking it, or it might require some kind of custom conversion.

On top of this, some mods (for other games) are apparently not downloadable using this method, or indeed any method outside of Steam - apparently.

So if this doesn't work for another game, I'd recommend checking in with that game's community for UGC conversion/installation tips/tools, or possibly complaining to Steam/Valve/game's publisher directly.

Well, this is AWESOME.
Thank you tocicious for liberation and squid830 for the heads up.
Thank you squid830 for those instructions.

I did not did my researches first, and was a bit bummed to realize that I had no access to the steam workshop.
I was a bit sad of that, especially given that I bought the bundle with dragonfall while I already had buyed Shadowrun returns on steam last year.

But wile as you gave us the means to still fetch the UGC, I am lazy as a sloth.
Yep, I admit it.

That's why I have taken a few hours of my weekend to put together a very simple application for windows (test in 8.1 and 7) that will present you the steam workshop web page, and allow you to directly download the ugc from a single button click.

You will need to have .net 4.5 installed to run this, but any machine up to date should have it.
Simply fire the application, enter an UGC page, and click the "add this UGC to my library" button, on the top right.

Be advised than due to limitation in windows 7 webpage display in .net, there are javascript errors (that are hidden) but prevent you to enter an UGC page by clicking on the picture.
This works correctly on windows 8 and 8.1

edit: drats! I cannot past links now....
well, time to be crafty. add "https://" in front of those addresses:

The installer is there: dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/6699824/shadowrun%20returns%20ugc%20downloader.zip
and the source is available there: dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/6699824/shadowrunUgcDownloader_sources.zip

A small video presenting the app is on youtube too: youtube.com/watch?v=HI7GKFsNYJg&feature=youtu.be

Nice work tschork! Trust a coder to think writing an app is quicker than following instructions... ;)

Well anyway, using the app is definitely quicker and less hassle, that's for sure!

To make this easier for others, I'll repost the links:

I was having the same problem with another game. Try using this site. http://steamworkshopdownloader.com/
I was so very happy to finally find this.
Hi guys,

As mattamac230 signaled me, I just modified the app so that it uses steamworkshopdownloader.com rather than the now dead gaddons.org web site to retrieve details.

You can use the same links as before, I have updated both the source and the installer.
Hi Tschork. I have a little prblem with Steam Workshop Downloader... I get proper URL, paste it, click 'download' button and then... NOTHING HAPPENS.

Any ideas what's going on? :/

Hi Haldeon,

Have you watched the video that explain how to use it?
The program download silently the UGC in the Shadowrun returns folder if it exists.
Nothing more, nothing less.
The video is there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HI7GKFsNYJg
Look at the bottom of the window, to see if the download finished correctly.

Once it's done, then simply start your GOG edition Shadowun returns, and you will be able to launche the downloaded UGC.

...well in fact I am trying to download Europa Universalis IV mod but this is the only place with 'download workshop mods without steam account' found by me :D

i thought SteamWorkshopDownloader is universal... When I paste URL of the mod I wanna download, proper thumbnail and DOWNLOAD button appears, but when I click on the button - nothing happens.

Any suggestions? I cannot find any advices about SWD website, nor other legitimate way of 'indirect workshop download'...
The website, steam workshop downloader no longer works. neither does the downloader app mentioned in this thread on Windows 7...

Dang - looks like Steam changed their download servers. If someone finds the new one, let us know and we should be able to get this to work again...
