We can both connect to other people's games, but not each other. We both tried hosting.

In my case joining my own game and then when my friend invited me I left my solo game went to menu and joined him, it worked in that case but you might want to look on the web OUTSIDE of steam discussions. If my solution works that's great just dont look at steam one's cause they are usually connected to some steam issues.

It seemed to be a problem with Discord. I closed that, then he could join, and I reopened it. And it's weird because I didn't have to close it when he rejoined later on.

lol, discord does some weird things lately. Glad that your game got to work.
I'm on the same network as my friend, I send invites and she accepts them but nothing happens. I suspect it's a port issue, how do I fix it?

EDIT: I followed the guide "Howto: GOG/Steam crossplay with friends" and it ended working great for us!

Does this help?
Multiplayer worked much better for me on Steam. I told my buddies about SW2 had them redeem the free keys on GOG but we can never stay connected. We each tried being host and it just won't stay connected for longer than 4 minutes. They bought the game on Steam today and we haven't had any problems connecting there.
