If you are having problems with the color make a text file within the septerra core folder.
add the lines

taskkill /F /IM Explorer.exe
septerra.exe
Start explorer.exe

then save it as Septerra.bat if it is still a text file change the hide extension for know type under folder options and erase .txt then double click on septerra.bat to get the game to run and the graphic problem should be fixed and allow you to play

Still crashes the same way for me in Win8

The only way i have found to keep the video and get it to run is to use timeslips patch
http://timeslip.users.sourceforge.net link is at the very bottom on the left

but it has a glitch for some of the menus where the buttons jump a little
I fixed the color problem by changing my desktop background to a solid color.

That was on a computer I don't have anymore, though. Now I just have the low framerate problem. Maya won't even move if I try to put up with it.

15 years. I'll never finish this game.

Quick question for anybody who has tried it on both systems -- does the game run noticeably differently on Win8 than on 7?

All these compatibility problems, can't wait for when Win9 rolls around.
I finally got it in Windows 8.1.

I don't know if this is posted elsewhere, but I never found it if it was:

I installed patch 1.04. It's not necessary, but it's a good idea.
I did not install the unofficial Timeslip patch.
I installed QuickTime 4, which I got from oldversion.com. If you have QuickTime 7, make sure you uninstall it cleanly first.
I removed QuickTime.qts from the game's folder. It interfered with the installed version of QuickTime.

I guess it wasn't really Windows' fault, because it runs perfectly for me: no slowdown, no glitches (so far), no weird color palette, no shutting down Explorer, no ugly transcoded AVIs. I don't even have to turn on any compatibility settings aside from running it as an administrator (or changing folder permissions to get around that and the UAC warnings). Just works, movies and all. Hope it works for you.

I cannot thank you enough, good sir. I fought the blasted glitch a month or so back and without a result. Thought there's no cure. And then I find your solution, and it works! Thank you again!

And yet when I tried this a few weeks ago it didn't solve my problem at all. I honestly don't understand this problem with windows 8/8.1. There seem to be a number of fixes people say work perfectly (Timeslip's patch, removing quicktime.qts, using Quicktime 4, compatibility modes, colours options etc. etc. etc.), others chime in to agree and myself and a few others just can't seem to get any of them to work.

I've wanted to play this game since it first came out, but never got around to buying it - then I picked it up here on an offer two years ago (or has it been three now?). I really would like to play this game properly some day, but nothing I try seems to work. It had gone beyond maddening frustration now to just plain depressing. :( Still, at least I only paid a pittance for it.
You can always try VM or dual boot solution. The game works perfectly in Win7 with compatibility mode activated.
My own fixes don't work for me anymore, and they haven't since before I upgraded to WIndows 10. And for me, no version of Quicktime works properly in Win10.

Edit: The fix in the other Windows 8 problem topic works perfectly for me!
