When I fight a battle, the game freezes and nothing happens. If I alt+tab and come back, the game will continue. However, I need to alt+tab after EVERY battle for this to work. That makes the game unplayable. Any assistance will be great, thank you!

Running an AMD 6000+ 3.0 GHz Dual Core Win7 64-bit OS.

EDIT: It freezes when the exp/gold/item popups would appear.

New Edit: I went to my geforce and control panel and setup a process just for Septerra turning everything off. After that didn't work, I turned everything on (even those that aren't normally on) and suddenly it's working (and working faster than normal to boot)! Thank goodness!

This is interesting... which options were not on before? It seems that enabling one of them has fixed your problem, and it would be useful to know which in case others have a similar issue with the game.
Could you please let us know what you turned on as I have the same issue and making a profile and turning everything on isn't working for me

Edit: NM, I added

ScaleMode = 0
CpuIdle =1

to my ini file and that fixed it. I had the idle set to 5 but then I had mouse lag

I have the exact same problem.
I resolved this issue successfully by installing the June 2010 DirectX Runtime.
Still get the freeze on Windows 7. Alt+Tab doesn't work and also the runtime package didnt help. How exactly did you do this with an extra process for the game?

I am having the freezing issue as well, if anyone knows how to fix this that would be great. I tried alt-tab and nothing and the runtime package as well... so I have no clue what to do.
Hi guys, I found a solution that to works perfectly for me. I'm also playing on Windows 7, 64 bit. My graphics card is a GeForce 560 GTX.

I figured that it's an issue related to the game being rendered too fast or something so I activated Vsync in the Nvidia Control Panel which caps the game at 60 FPS by default and indeed, the game continues after combat the way it should.

If it doesn't help you may wanna try capping the framerate at an even lower value. You can adjust the frame limit with NVIDIA Inspector. I don't know what options you have when using AMD cards, though.
On my second day playing this game, I have also encountered this problem. I have restarted the game a few times, I have looked into the game's ini-file (ScaleMode=0, CpuIdle=1; just what the IceBear prescribed), I have used ALT+TAB to leave and return to the game, I have turned on Vertical sync and disabled threaded optimisation. I have tested each change individually and the lot of them together.

The problem persists.

In order to proceed I have to move the mouse around. There appears to be a few locations, near the edges of the viewport, where mouse movement will cause the post-combat routine to "step" forward. Each step moves the camera a little bit, until the post-combat messages show and I can resume gameplay.

System: Win7 64 bit / GeForce GTX 580

EDIT -
Restarted computer. Also did not help.
Mouse movement detail: Moving the mouse across UI elements at the bottom of the screen seems to be a reliable way of advancing the post-combat procedure. -- Or was that a hallucination? The UI elements are not there at that time. Well. It turns out to be a good region for mouse-movement to advance the process anyway.

EDIT -
Sometimes the UI elements show up after combat, before the reward messages. When that happens, moving the mouse across elements produces reliable progress towards the reward messages.

EDIT -
Pressing (and holding) a key is the most reliable "solution" yet. Any key seems to function (possible exception of modifier keys ALT SHIFT CONTROL), although I prefer to use one that has no function in the game.

EDIT - new discoveries
1. I have only had this problem while running another (Windowed) application (such as internet explorer) simultaneously with Septerra Core.
2. There is a second symptom: My party's speed stats has no effect; all bars fill up at the exact same speed (stat range 59 - 75).

I launched the program without any other applications running today, and wondered why the problem was gone. Then I opened a browser, and returned to the game, causing the problem (not progressing at end of combat, speed stat ineffective) to return. Closing the browser made the problem go away again.

Speculation: I am running septerra core with an application specific nvidia setup that enables vsync. Enabling vsync is one of the proposed solutions, but it did not work for me. However, I also observed tearing effects even after vsync was enabled, so I think my system may have had difficulty identifying this application and applying the graphics profile. If so, having another application running might be part of the cause.

I also encountered this problem with 1.05 unofficial patch (Win7 64). For me, the solution was to remove this patch and to run the game in WinXP SP3 compatibility mode (Win98 compatibility mode works as well).
I have set into septerra.ini in game folder

CPUIdle = 5
ScaleMode = 0

And it solved the issue.
