Just finished downloading Septera Core and tried to launch it... no dice. I keep getting this same "Fatal Panic Error" (see attached) while the opening branding movies are running. Skipping the movies just makes the error happen quicker. Anyone have any ideas?
System specs:
Windows XP SP3
3 GHz P4 HT
2GB RAM
Nvidia 7600GS 256MB (w/ latest drivers)
Audigy LS

Try running the game in windows 95 compatibility mode and you can't skip the movies apparently without getting that error. At least your not meant to press spacebar while a movie is running.

Nope, still happens right after the "Valkyrie" movie. I hear a female voice start saying "In the beginning..." then the error pops up. It seems the error is solely associated with that opening cutscene, as regardless of whether or not I skip over the branding movies (using the ESC key), it happens as soon as that movie tries to start.
EDIT - In fact, after changing it to Win 95 compatibility, it appears to have automatically changed back to Win 98 compatibility, as was set by default when the game was installed.

Hmmmm...I remember there being something in the Valkyrie archives about cutscene crashes...let me see if I can find it..
Try this FTP styled archive.. It also shows a Septerra Core 1.04 patch. What is the version of the GOG game? The game information page doesn't say which version it is patched to...
EDIT: corrected minor grammatical errors.

According to that error message I got, it was a "v1.04 Panic" so I assume the game is already at version 1.04.

My not looking at your pic in OP = FAIL XD.
Did anything from that FTP help though?
Unfortunately no. The reg files did have slightly different settings than the default ones created at the install, so I modified my registry to match, no joy.
I'm beginning to think this might be an issue with Quicktime. I've been having issues with Quicktime for a while now, so it really wouldn't surprise me if it has bled over into this game. I'm about to undertake a complete uninstall/reinstall of Windows (for other unrelated reasons), so I might just pick this up again after I'm done. Maybe it will even fix the problem.

Do you have the latest QUicktime??
Oh and for the compatibility change, try using the "Change Settings for All Users" option to clear the compatibility menu from the GOG default settings... That's how I managed to wrest control from the GOG wrapper.

Yep, I have the latest QT, but it crashes if I don't run it in GDI (Safe) mode, which ain't right.
I don't have an option to "Change Settings for All Users", is that a Vista thing (I'm on XP)?

I was getting that error too but I was successfully able to switch the compatibility mode and get the game started (XP 64).
edit: ok now I can't get it to work again. The time it worked, I pressed ESC to get through some cutscenes and now when I do that I get the error at different parts.
edit2: after a little more testing, I seem to have found a way to get it working. If I hit ESC very early in the Valkyrie video (before the picture shows up) then I get to the game intro video and it works. I haven't had trouble skipping the topware video or the intro, but sometimes I get the error if I skip the first video. This works with Win 95 and Win 98 compatibility.
edit3: Of course, this doesn't help much when the game crashes the same way in the in-game videos. But it does seem like some kind of video playback problem.

Possibly a Vista thing. But if you go to Properties, then select the Compatibility tab there *should* be a box or something of the sort that says "Show settings for all users". That's how I wrested control from the GOG wrapper and set my own compatibility settings when I had problems and I wanted to experiment...

Are you hitting the Spacebar at anytime during the in-game videos? The developer actually lists "Don't hit the Spacebar" as a solution to avoid crashing during in-game videos...

high rated
It's not a brilliant solution, but if you make a backup of the .db files, delete or rename MONOLITH.DB then create a new text file and give that the name MONOLITH.DB, the game will at least skip all the videos at start up, allowing you to get to the in-game menu.
The downside, is not being able to watch the videos. And the character speech is still skipping before it ends. =/ I expect that if the in-game videos cause the same crashes, they will need to be skipped by creating dummy files too.
For what it's worth, I get the same errors with Win XP pro Service pack 3. I should try this on my other PC to see if it's an SP3 problem...
*** Fixed it ***
You need to go into your audio settings via control panel or however else you get to them (I have a quick launch icon for this)
Get to the audio details tab and turn off Hardware accleration (top slider) also set sample rate to the lowest setting (standard) (bottom slider). The videos will then play without crashing and the in game speech should not skip.
The names of the tabs and settings may vary for English OSes -- this is also probably an XP only fix.

** Confirmed **
Thanks. I was replacing QuickTime.qts with newer version from apple but videos just didn't play at all. The audio fix seems to be working well.

Well, after finishing most of my complete Windows reinstall (everything except some incidental software), the game just works for me without changing the hardware acceleration settings. However, since I certainly don't recommend a Windows reinstall as a solution and your idea was confirmed to work for at least one other person, you get the solution credit.
Thanks to everyone for the help!
I can confirm that this works for me also. Thank you very much!
