This has happened twice now..happens as soon as I leave the temple.
The message is the usual: "Septerra Core Game Engine has encountered a problem and needs to close..."
Could post the error report contents and/or specs if necessary.
Running XP SP3.
Edit: Okay, it didn't happen the third time. :P
Still, any information could be useful. I've had this happen with other games (on GOG and otherwise) too.

That would probably help as there isn't really much to go on yet. But have you already tried lowering both hardware acceleration and sample rate quality sliders in the Audio dialog tab (via Control Panel)?
General hardware specs might also be helpful.
It's been fine since..!
But:
MSI Radeon 4830/AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core/OCZ Platinum XTC PC2-8500 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-1066 CL5-5-5-15 240PIN DIMM Dual Channel Memory.
Happened again upon entering the Graveyard with the Draxx head and again after the scene where you warn Dugan..:(
Would rather not lower acceleration..
Trying 2000 compatibility mode now.

Set the it to run on a single core as well, it may help make it more stable.

As is my understanding, there's no good way to do that.
No crashes yet since setting compat. mode..here's hoping.

It can be done with a shortcut command

That forum is for vista but as far as I can tell it would work on xp as well as all they appear to be doing is opening cmd.exe and running the game with the required core setting. I don't have a dual core machine though so I can't verify it my end.
I got the same f*cking error.
EDIT: Disabling hadware acceleration seems to solve the problem. I'm begining to have far too many problems with far too many gog games..

Since you have an AMD processor, they give you a good way to do it: the AMD Dual Core Optimizer Utility. You can find it on the AMD website.

That might speak to some pervasive problem on your end, rather than on GOG's end. Septerra Core was actually the first GOG game that I have had any major problems with (crashed at launch), which was solved simply with the sound hardware acceleration adjustment.

Do you know if there are some kind of AMD phenom optimizer?

Nope, no such thing exists (to my knowledge).

I have been experiencing this same crash. I also receive it when I enter the bone village on shell 7. I noticed it happens pretty much everywhere when entering and exiting the world map. Adjusting the sound acceleration did nothing. I have an AMD Phenom as well and will attempt to try optimizing the game for single core.
I also experience crashes in certain areas.
Most frequent locations are
Exiting Azziz temple in the begining and after you get your own ship
Exiting Wind City Cathetral after cutscene
Sound Caverns on shell 7 (here game crashes every time if you enter and are forced to exit due to mind wrecking sound)
Might be scripting problem as all three may be altering game state (two later also involve cut scene).
My hardware specs if it helps to figure out the problem
