Just to clear this out once and for all:
SWOS on gog.com HAS Joystick support and you can play with a friend on the same computer (with a joystick and a keyboard or with TWO joystick).
BOTH on WINDOWS and MAC OS.
Now:

ON WINDOWS
JOYSTICK SUPPORT
Make sure to have installed your joystick/joypad driver (360 Xbox wired/wireless joypad? YESYESYES)
Then just plug it in and install the game.
Once you've installed the game go to start menu/all programs/gog.com folder/swos/settings
now you should manage settings from a dos like panel -> configuration/controls
here you can choose between:
ONE Player (keyboard)
TWO players (joystick + keyboard)
TWO players (TWO joystick)
Follow the on screen instructions to bind the controls.

ON MAC OS
The trick here is to download boxer.app
The first time, run the game from here so that you can setup everything from the dos like panel just like on windows.

If you're still having issue or doubts, please ask here! I'll try to give you all the help you need.
Hi, I just bought the game and tried to follow the instructions you wrote. I have a wired XBox controller on Win 8.1 x64. The problem is that when I try to calibrate the device it seems ok, but then in the game I just can't move to the left even in the menus. Am I doing something wrong here? Thanks.

First, you need to simply install the game (click on the DMG; drag and drop into the application folder; ecc).
Then:
ApplicationFolder/
Sensible World of Soccer 96-97 (right click - show package contents)/
contents/
resources/
Sensible World of Soccer 96-97.boxer (right click - open with -> boxer.app)

Now, you should be able to setup your controls from a DOS like screen.

For the ones who are having trouble when trying to move the LEFT ANALOG STICK to the LEFT:
It's an issue that I haven't encounter and right now i can only offer some guesses other than real solutions.

My advice is to initially setup your control with the JOYSTICK and KEYBOARD (2 PLAYERS) configuration:
When asked to move your J-pad controls UP/LEFT - DOWN/RIGHT and press the FIRE button, do NOT use the LEFT ANALOG STICK but use the DIRECTION CONTROLLER (when asked to move CENTER and press the fire button; just press the FIRE button).
Once you've saved your configuration, in-game you can play with the LEFT ANALOG STICK as well.

I wish I could be more helpful with this issue but right now that's all i can think of.
I'll investigate further to offer more advice.

BTW, your final configuration should look like this:
LEFT X: 0
TOP Y: 0
press A

RIGHT X: 128
BOTTOM Y: 128
press A

CENTRE X: 64
CENTRE Y: 64
press A

NORMAL FIRE: BUTTON 1 (press A)
SPECIAL FIRE: BUTTON 2 (press B) <- (useful to call the bench during a match and make substitutions).

I read your page at the link, thanks. So basically, we should let it configured with keyboard and then map those keys on the pad via DOSBox?
Nextnarciso you have got me further than anyone else on the whole of the internet has got!

Sadly I still cannot do it! I am on a mac and have followed all the steps. Dragged the dmg into boxer got to dos hit the install to get the which then setup as your picture and sorted the joystick controls and saved. This may be a silly question but how do I then start the game? In the click a program to launch I only have boo.bat, dos4gw.exe, englsh.bat, english.exe the french, italian and german versions of these bat and exe files the install.exe, mssw95.exe and sound.exe! I may be really stupid and mock me if I am but clicking on these just gives me errors and no game! I am only trying to get it to work with my competition pro joystick like the good old days! You seem to be the man! Please please help me!

Thanks in advance! P

Sorry for the late late replay!!!
If you're playing it on a mac you can just type "sensible world of soccer" in spotlight and lunch the game (your control settings will be applied even if you don't lunch boxer.app anymore).
BTW I don't remember exactly but either the english.bat or english.exe will start the game (works the same for the other languages). I'm not using boxer.app anymore 'cause I'm also playing on a mac!

Hi - i tried your advice but no joy! I have a thrustmaster joystick. When you say the 'direction controller' are you talking about what you have on a joypad? Cos the joystick doesn't have one - just the stick - so im stuck with not being able to go left. I tried entering the info via the keyboard - (i.e. entering the value '0' for top left/top y) but it wont recognise info from the key board. Do i have to get a joy pad?

Cheers in advance.
You can use the Key Mapper when DOSBox is running - www.dosbox.com/DOSBoxManual.html#KeyMapper. Simply bind the joystick axes / fire button to the keyboard controls
