Does anyone have any ideas on how to get a controller working with the Linux version?

EDIT: I found the answer in the "joystick multiplayer yes" thread,so all sorted!

I am trying tto config my 8Bitdo pro in the dos menu and it does recognise it and every direction is also being picked up but, move up and left then press fire, the same for down and right and press fire, central also.

I have made a little bit of progress recently as it is now moving up without seemingly mmoving down automatically once I release pressing up.
I move left and it automatically moves to the right, down is moving fine but no right direction.

It is very awkward trying to move up and left and fire, either at the same time, or in sequence.

Maybe the 8Bitdo isn't the right controller, as I am doing it to the instructions with no luck whatsoever.

My fire buttons are working but one for normal fire and the special fire button is leading me to the dugout and in there this is where it gets even hairier as it's almost impossible ot get back out of due to how the controller isn't calibrating properly for me.

Fantastic little game too, a classic and so glad ot get my nands on it again and get playing it as I was using emulators before this to play it.
I'm close ot going back to them and playing it on there but I was so hoping I could get to play it via this platform instead.

Seeking osme advice please?

I was having a mare configuring a c64 joystick on mac to get this game to work with joystick mapper and others not working. I just got 'Enjoyable' working though a treat, the c64 joystick and my old macally joypad are both working really well, Id recommend downloading Enjoyable. Im on Mac OS X mojave
Hi, So will this work straight away with an xbox controller or will I need to configure it with joy2key or similar. I just want to be able to plug and play lol. I tried configuring games and im useless. just want one player mode with a joypad? Thanks
1) Open up the game folder (by default "C:\GOG Games\Sensible World of Soccer 96-97")
2) Open the file dosbox_SWOS_single.conf in Notepad.
3) Add the line "install.exe" (without quotes) between "cls" and "english.exe"
4) Open the file dosbox_SWOS.conf in Notepad.
5) Change the line "timed=true" to "timed=false"
6) Save the modified config files and close them.
7) Start the game using the usual link. Don't use the French, German or Italian links in the start menu - you will have the opportunity to change your language).
8) Go to "configure", "control", "joystick and keyboard" to activate. Also change your language from this menu if you're so inclined. You will also need to calibrate your joypad, and DOSBox is a bit sluggish doing this with the default config.
9) Save the settings and exit. The game will then start automatically with joystick support.

YOU ARE GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the important line:
--> 5) Change the line "timed=true" to "timed=false"

With only that change I managed to use properly my Xbox One gamepad.
Ive just downloaded SWOS. I am yet to buy a joystick. What do I need? Is there a way of getting a usb device working?

If you do not care for an original experience, download the modern SWOS from https://www.sensiblesoccer.de/swos-2020

You need the game files after you install your GoG version, and you can play SWOS as never before... original graphics but widescreen, multiplayer, joysticks, updated rosters, high fidelity sounds, language packs, etc...!
Sadly this does not work I have tried changing those conf files. I have a Steam Deck and would love to use the controls.

I know there is SWOS 2020 but it doesn’t have the chairman cut scenes
Well, I have figured it out and have the original SWOS running on Steam Deck and controls working too, what an accomplishment :)
