Bought this today (along with Back to the Future, the other 2 Sam & Max games and Tales of Monkey Island) and cannot get Episode 5 of Season 1 (Sam & Max Save the World) to start at all. All I get is an error message that says "SamMax105.exe has stopped working". That's it, no more information. Every other episode of every Telltale game worked. I understand that this is an earlier version due to a game breaking bug that hasn't been fixed yet.

Running Windows 8.1, updated video card drivers, blah, blah. I installed it at "D:\GOG Games\Sam and Max 1\". Also tried "D:\SAMMAX1" and "C:\SAMMAX1". No difference, still doesn't work.

Anyone have any ideas?

Episode 5 did work for me even after they've fixed the bug, that is after they've downgraded this specific episode to an earlier version, but I haven't got any ideas what could be the problem in your case.

I'd contact GOG support.
Not that this makes any sense, but I was poking around my video card settings and SLI was disabled for some reason. Enabled it, and now the game works. Weird, but whatever!
I'm having the exact same problem, this topic was actually the first hit when I googled the error message. Can you give a more detailed account of your fix?
I am also suffering from this. I'm running Windows 8.1 64-bit, and I cannot get Episode 5 to launch. It gets far enough to change my screen resolution, and then crashes with the standard "SamMax105.exe has stopped working" dialogue.
Thought I was having the same issue, but apparently not.

Ignore this post and carry on.

(Mods, we really need a delete function, this is a bit silly.)

Might be too late for some, but I just got this game and faced the same problem on Win8 x64.

This worked for me:

Right click. Compatibility:
- pick Vista Service Pack 2
- Uncheck disable scaling on high DPI

I was having the same problem, and tried your solution, but it didn't work. Then I disabled the compatibility with Vista but left the DPI option unchecked and BAM!, it worked like a charm. Thanks a lot!
I had the same problem with season 2 episode 4. ep 1-3 had no problem but ep. 4 "stopped working" when trying to start it. After some trying around I guessed it was a problem with some of the default settings. So I copied the preference file from episode 3 (which I knew worked) and copied it to season 4. And voila, it worked like a charm. The file is called prefs.prop can be found in each of the episodes' folders (e.g. C:\My Game Folder\Sam and Max Beyond Space and Time\Episode 204 - Chariots of the Dogs). Just to be safe I would recommend to backup the original file.

Nice side effect: This way you don't have to configure your settings for every episode again and again and again ...
