Ok so it looks like the sale ends tomorrow (Monday 18th), and from the looks of things there's more bad feedback than good for SR2's PC port (even with the Gentleman of the Row mod). I just wanted to hear the final verdict for myself and anyone else thinking of buying this. (I would be running it on an HP Pavilion laptop, Windows 8.1 if it makes any difference.)

So what do you say guys? Buy or Bust?

P.S I was going to see the latest feeback on JonDR's thread, but for some reason it only shows the first page -

http://www.gog.com/forum/saints_row_series/saints_row_2_how_is_the_performance_of_the_gog_version

Last time I checked there were at least 5 pages....it it just me or is it bugged?

I'm in the same boat. Have wanted to get this on Steam for ages but avoided it because of the speed issues. Then it comes to GOG and I want to get it even more, but still there are speed issues. :(

And yes, that forum is doing the same to me too. Has been for two or three days now. Just won't show anything past page 1, even if I manually add page 2 to the URL. Bit strange really. Also note that the number of responses to threads in the Saints Row forum sometimes shows a zero instead of the correct number. I reckon something has gone a bit screwy with the forum. Don't know if it is just the Saints Row forum or if others are also affected.
Overall... if you're using Win 8.1 (as far as I understand, the speed issues do not happen there, I'm using Win8 at the moment and didn't find speed issues at all), disable GOG's "fix" on nVidia Inspector, install GotR and put SweetFX above it, you'll get a 30-40FPS framerate which is A LOT better in comparison to what GOG's gives you at first, I would say it's playable for 4 bucks. I spent 60€ for the Xbox 360 one a few years ago, so... sounds good for me.

I would say it's playing better than on my Xbox 360 back a few years ago. Now... the game is nothing more than a sandbox who was seeking his own identity back then, with good results, yes, but... in the end it was a GTA wannabe with some cheap gangsta appearance. I like it, and it surely feels nostalgic to me, but if you're looking for a better experience I would tell you to move to SR:TT.

Beware that this game is completely unrealistic and can't be compared to modern GTA's, Sleeping Dogs, Mafia, whatever it comes to your mind.

Any chance we can see a video of it in action? Only another user said the speed was okay (but they saw fast running animations). Turns out, when they put a video on YouTube for us to see, it was in fact running too fast, as evident when the timer showed up in the top left corner on a mission as the seconds were counting down just a little too fast.
Mh... I think this is the moment to try the shadowplay feature of the NVIDIA Geforce Experience.

The user I mentioned was also on Win 8.1.

Mh... that thread is completely buggy to me.

Can someone remind me of an activity with a timer?

I'm recording the game with Shadowplay at the moment.

Edit: Alright, confirmed, time works fine. I'll upload a video if anyone wants a proof of it.

My setup:

Windows 8.1 installed on an SSD (Game is installed on an HDD)
i7 4790k
16GB RAM
GTX 970

I don't think any of this would really matter, but who knows... the one that uploaded that other video should share his setup as well.

It's all of them.

I would like a video.
All feedback about this game's performance is welcome!

There you go:

I don't have an account on YT since I just hate the world and everything in it, so, there's no problem if anyone wants to upload it for me.

I thought the framerate would be visible, sadly, it wasn't.

As said, the game runs at 30-40FPS with some unexplainable drops (inside buildings, for example) to 25-30.

Wow!
I can't believe how smooth the game runs in this video.
Thanks!

Would it be too much to ask for a video that shows a mission with a timer?
Only then I can be 100% sure about the speed it runs.
Of course, why not (whoever you can already see the timer on an activity at the last part of the video), tomorrow I'll repeat the first mission (after the prologue) if it doesn't overwrite my actual save, since it tells you to get to the court on 4 minutes.

It's really late (or soon) here, I should go to bed, lol.

Just so everyone reads it, here's what I did:

1-Remove FPS limitation from NVI (nVidia inspector), which GOG installs to "fix" the timing
2-Install SweetFX 2.0 and the Gentlemen of the Row mod
3-If you're having problems, disable motion blur and anti-aliasing (with SweetFX you don't need AA, since it already provides it for you)

Notice that my game is running at 1920x1200, on the setup I posted some posts ago.

Damn, I totally missed that timer.
Must be because I'm very tired.

Anyway, thanks for the tutorial.
I'm buying the game before the sale ends.
I hope the game runs that well here...if it doesn't, I still can get a refund hehe.
Cool. Keep us informed!
From now on "can your PC run Crysis?" will be "can your PC run Saint's Row 2?".

Best port ever. I ask myself who did this masterpiece of software engineering.

Just watched your video and yes it does appear to be the correct speed for you. The running isn't animated too fast and the countdown timer on that mission at the end of the video was about right too.

That other person's setup is:

Intel i5-4460s
6GB RAM
GeForce GTX720 2GB
Windows 8.1

Running at 1080p, v-sync, AA and anisotropic all turned on.
