I just got [Saints Row 2] from the giveaway and I'm wondering if the GOG version runs well compared to the Steam version. When you look at the steam reviews of the game, you'll see a lot of negative reviews on how bad a port this is. Is it different on GOG?

Thanks.

This forum is for the entire Saints Row series on GOG, so "this game" could refer to any of the 4 that are here. However, given that you mentioned the giveaway, I'm going to assume that you mean SR2.

Some people have problems with SR2, some don't. The GOG version always ran just fine for me, but others have complained about the game running too fast. In short, it varies from machine to machine.

Given that you already got the game for free, you might as well just answer your own question by installing it and seeing how it runs.
Edited, thanks.
Yes, GOG version really is different. Unfortunately though not for the better in this case. I own both Steam and GOG and GOG version is capped to 30fps which seemed to be achived through editing the executable file (I tried to swap files to check this). Other than this and the missing DRM GOG version is not different from the Steam version. The game still is not good optimized and on several configurations the game might not be much fun (depending on OS/GPU/CPU/control method).

Neither versions are running at all
I just spent an hour in Saints Row 2 and ugh, it runs but oh my is this the level of play on consoles? Sure does not make me want to ever get a console. It is locked at a low frame rate, totally shock full of graphical glitching and imprecise, jerky movements. Driving is a nightmare due to that. I cannot see how raising the f/s lockdown would improve on this as faster jerkiness would make me sick.

Despite what I said above, the game is kind of fun too and that will probably keep pulling me back for short stints (an hour or two) now and then.
Greetings!!
Can anyone provide any information regarding compatibility issues between the GOG version of SR2 and The Gentlemen of the Row mod. One user pointed that there may be issues as this version has its fps locked at 30.

And is the unmodded game playable (properly)? I read about problems regarding missions, cutscenes etc.

any information would be appreciated.
A mere hour and a bit in-game is not enough to help you there, sorry :-( except the cutscenes ran perfectly so far (that is more than can be said for the game itself. It feels like playing on a bad mouse pad while tipsy).

Not at all. Im using the GOTR mod and the game seems to stutter and vehicles control like butt. Idk if using an SSD will help with the stutter but I had to move it to my HDD for space issues. I also didnt realize the game was locked at 30 fps till I read this forum. Its free, cant complain but I rather not waste time with this unless I really have a dying need to play it or if the game ends up working better in the future. Could not even complete a simple race cause the stutter and vehicle controls were obnoxious.

My rig is i5 2500k @3.2 and GTX 1070.

The game's PC port is one of the worse ports out there, that's well-known, and many issues were left unresolved. And I don't know why people don't like things when they're at 30 FPS - sure, it's not as smooth as 60, but it's not like it's unbearable to watch. The game's still mostly playable and enjoyable in spite of this. I didn't really play this sort of game before, but trust me, don't let these things prevent you from immersing into the game. It's very much worth it.

Races aren't the only sort of side-mission, you can get through the story mode without them. Try the Septic Avenger (one of the game's most over-the-top moments), trafficking, car stealing, tagging (you can find all spots on the Internet), fight club...
