I am interested in buying this game but I wonder if it runs at widescreen reloutions without having to install a patch or mod. I recently downloaded the demo to try it out and while I liked the game the demo gave no opportunity to adjust the resolution whatsoever.
To those that own it or someone at GOG, will the game run in widescreen resolutions (preferably 16:10)? Or does it only run at 4:3 resolution but then stretches to fill the full screen on a widescreen monitor (which really doesn't count as widescreen)?

In the latest official Sacred, it only runs at 4:3 aspect ratio. It will run on widescreen monitors but it looks a little bit distorted on 16:10 -- it might look notably so on a 16:9 monitor. I find the best way to run it is in window mode to be honest, and resize your desktop screen resolution if you have to. This avoids distortion and only leads to some blanks at the edges (which aren't a problem if you don't have busy wallpaper).

Sacred Gold runs at 1024x768 by default, so on widescreen monitors, it will definitely become distorted. One thing you can try is to enable the setting to keep aspect ratio intact. Most drivers should be able to do this (yes, even the lowly Intel integrated graphics).
My AMD driver allows me to enable GPU scaling for the monitor, so I can choose these 3 options:
"scale image to full panel" - default normal behaviour
"maintain aspect ratio" - scale image to full panel but keeps the aspect ratio, resulting in black bars at top-bottom or sides
"use centered timings" - centers the image without resizing, keeping a physical pixels equivalent to an image pixel, so black bars will be all around the image, unless the image is at native resolution

I'm running 16:10 and have never once noticed distortion. I'm sure if I looked for it I'd be able to notice, but without looking for it, it's not noticeable. I've noticed the low resolution and been irked that I can't run it in a generally higher resolution though. Definitely follow the instructions Shmuttt gave about "maintain aspect ratio" if it bothers you, which I doubt it will.

If you have an nvidia card you can enable it to keep the aspect ratio and it will keep the image in it's 4:3 aspect and put black bars to the sides.

FYI this game is running on my netbook right now, an EeePC 904HA. I had to disable the videos in the options before you launch the game and lower the graphics to get it to run well, but it's running.
Also the weird resolution of the netbook forces you to do this weird scroll thing - you can't ever see the whole screen. Regardless, the game seems surprisingly playable on it.

Same here, i play it on 16:10 and never noticed a single distortion.
