I rescued Jacquaire from the bears. I took him back to the first place. Then I accepted his request to take him out of the place and then he was killed down in the dessert while I was doing another mission and now I cant find him to finish the rest of the quest off. Any ideas on how to proceed with this?

With companion characters, two things can happen.
1) They die, quest can't be completed, reload from last save. Sometimes you can complete it with a lesser bonus.
2) They are knocked out, appear dead. Wait 30 seconds and they revive.

ok the problem is that normally if you fail a quest it shows up in RED, but his quest is still showing up in BLUE in Tyr-Fasul. Ive been back to Tyr-Fasul and talked to everyone there and I cant find him there. But Im pretty sure the quests not failed yet. And I cant reload cause Ive already over written the last saved file with the current one and I dont have any earlier ones. (I tend to only save one file).
And in regards to your second comment. I thought that would happen to, but no, the theives killed him. He died and then he disapeared off my top right hand screen altogether. I walked around trying to find him but he wasn't there. Ive even been to "Braverock" to see if he ended up there but Ive had no luck finding him there either. Very frustrating

If the thieves killed him, and he is not on the top right of the screen, it's possible he was dropped from the companion list.
He might be waiting around the area of either the area battle or, the second (third? near Mascarell?) location for you to speak to him.

I''m having a similar problem, I didn't know of this, and now I have an useless character following me around and I cannot complete the quest

So, I know I am kinda late and this is 11 years later the first post. You can´t really get in the portal once the guy is following you. You have to start walking to Mascarell and when you get to a stone road he will leave you and you will complete the mission. You just complete it like that and in that road. If you decide to go to Mascarell from any other path he is follow you. If u take the portal to the desert he will keep around and he may bug as well, and when I say bug is that he will die and disappear and the quest will be undone. Oh, and remember to do that mission before doing "Riddle of the desert". There is a better description here in the Wolfe's Lair site. In that site they show the road you have to go so that he finish the quest.
