Hi all, I started playing Sacred 2 on Windows 7 on my laptop until the laptop crashed. I recently bought a new desktop with Windows 10. I installed Sacred 2 and it wouldn't start. GOG support told me Sacred 2 didn't work on their test computers and W10 isn't listed as a supported OS.
Has anyone had any luck or way of getting Sacred 2 to run on Windows 10? Would appreciate any ideas. If not, I'll have to try to bring my laptop back to life in order to play Sacred 2.

Thank you! I don't know why I didn't think of Google before. I just accepted what GOG told me.
I found a solution on a Steam forum; apparently, you have to start the game 3 times. The first two times the game will build a cache and you'll have to close the program by task manager. The game will start on the 3rd time. Works nice.
had some problems starting it
from GOG too. sacred2.exe will start in background but never get the active part in the process list.

Now I am starting sacred2 from the installed folder directly.
...\GOG Games\Sacred 2 Gold\system\sacred2.exe

Don't know why but it runs a little bit smother if you start it with administration rights.

It is running fine now with W10 but still has the creapy bugs like in the beginnings. (freezes and crashs when entering or leaving a mine), it often freezed in main menu when closing the game. (only way to fix it, quit running game-instance and in main menu use ALT+F4 to close the complete game). If not and it freeze you need to restart the pc or log of your profile... ;) there is no way after freeze to kill the process :(
This may help. Originally this was meant for AMD users, but maybe it does something with Win10 too.

NVidia PhysX
The only way I know of to get Sacred 2 to work on Win 10 is to use the fan patch. Which worked well for me when I used it.

Hello,

Thanks for help, it's work very good for me now :)

Ps: sorry my english is too bad.
I don't know if they changed the installer, but the game works (aaaaalmost :P) out of the box on the two Windows 10 machines I installed it on. For some reason the shortcut on my desktop didn't do anything (visibly at least) so I started the game with the sacred2.exe from the system subfolder. After that the desktop shortcut starts the game normally. Both PCs run win10 (64-bit, version 1907, build 16299.248) with an intel skylake i5 and nvidia GTX 760/960 card (390.77 driver version) and have no community patch installed (yet, i guess. until i run into bsods/crashes). when I tried the game the first time around, errrr, 2012/13-ish, the longest time I played was like 1-2minutes before the bsods killed my game every single time and that was with windows 7..

Addendum 23.12.2018:

Seems I was a little bit too fast... The deeper you get into the game, the more it starts to crash! :((
Also the little tricks like setting compatibelity to XP SP3 doesn't really work... it seems with those 2 hangings when starting the game the 1st time after an fresh installation is nothing more then Windows trying to automatically set a compatibelity mode by its own... Why? Because when I tried to set it for XP SP3 it was already set for W7! (Don't forget my Rig runs on W8.1... so I guess this will be the same on an W10 system too!)

Hello Folks

Had a similar situation, not W10 but W8.1 x64 (yes, still alive, until the very end ;)

Installed Sacred 2 waaay back (about 2016), but actually never played it until today! (20.12.2018) Started the vanilla GOG version with GOG Galaxy, but nothing happened. Sacred 2 was visible within the Windows Taskmanager, but nothing else, so I shot it down there.

First I did "Verify/Repair" from GOG Galaxy (it scratched around a bit and you could see some installer flashing shortly in the Tasklist), after then tried to start it from GOG Galaxy again (2nd time now), again only visible within the Taskmanager, and again I shot it down.

And... you can guess it (as described by BrokenBull above), when started the 3rd time with GOG Galaxy... it run. Without any compatibility settings done, no other modifications, just run the vanilla installation from GOG Galaxy. So far no crashes, even after a couple of gameplaying hours in a row.

Really strange thing though, but well it works, at least for me right now. (I'll see what it's like when I build a new W10 Playbox in a few years... ;)

Regards

Sparksman

I somehow made the game work on Win 10. Had to download an old NvidiaPhsyx dll file and put it inside system directory of game. Then had to change compatibility setting to Win XP SP3 and then run the game from command line because Win 10 kept blocking the exe even after giving it permission to run as administrator. It work now but everytime I have to do it from Powershell as admin.
